Some people define reiki as faith healing, while others say faith isn't required to make it work. I believe it works, so it does for me and a few people I've worked on.

I've used it for years to reduce pain from an old skateboard injury to my knee, combat stress and control moderate headaches. I wouldn't say it is a cure for cancer, though. It's more of complementary method of dealing with hurts than it is a cure for anything.

Whether the use of hari could be classified as faith healing, I don't know. I've also been treated with accupuncture to reduce pain from the previously mentioned injury, which worked in the short term (weeks) but I'm afraid nothing but surgery will fix it.

So whether this stuff is flat out bull dada isn't a worry. It works for some people and some conditions. What is worrysome is when people claim that accupuncture or reiki can cure everything. Nagoyaguy came out swinging there, eh?

Liz, I take it seriously because I had an elderly relative (my grandmother) who spent thousands of dollars on fake nonsense like this and got no benefit. I dont want to see other people have the same experience.

It is ridiculous that adults would believe in these fairy tales. Another treatment very similar to reiki that operates on the same principles (theraputic touch) was effectively and resoundingly shown to be absolute bollocks in a science project done by an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT. She proved that the basic premise (that the practitioner can detect a human energy field) was false, so by logic the treatment itself is based on nothing more than psychological manipulation.

Whether or not these treatments can "relieve pain" is an extremely subjective test of their efficacy. It is a weasel phrase, in the same vein as "healing", that can mean everything and nothing.

" It is our negative thoughts and feelings that are the main cause of restriction in the flow of Ki. All negative or dis-harmonious thoughts or feelings will cause a disruption in the flow of Ki."

So, apparently you DO need to believe in reiki in order for it to work.

"our negative thoughts are not just in the brain, but also collect in various locations through-out the body and in the aura. The places where negative thoughts and feelings collect is where Ki is restricted in its flow. The physical organs that exist at these locations are restricted in their functioning. If the negative thoughts and feelings are not eliminated quickly, illness results."

So, we become ill due to our negative thoughts collecting in various places in our body. Not from virus, germ, cancer, whatever. From bad feelings. Also note that reiki involves believing in humans having an "aura" that can ALSO cause illness. The website is replete with stories of "miracle cures" of terminally ill cancer patients who, after receiving reiki, suddenly recovered. You can also do reiki on YOURSELF, and at long distance for others! Give me a break

IF the practitioners of these techniques were honest and said that whatever effect they cause is purely placebo in nature, that there was no evidence of any physical effect, that they all cater to the human emotion rather than to physiology, I wouldn't care so much.

Homeopathy is another "alternative" therapy that is based on smoke and mirrors. IT works on the premise that water has memory, of all things.

I had someone do a Reiki on me and it was done by the practitioner placing his or her hands on certain parts of your body for short periods of time. Kinda interesting that one of the positions where the hands were put was around your crotch.
