I'm not sure what you guys mean by "best prices". When I want to go somewhere, I look up the prices from 5-6 travel agencies and web sites and they are ALWAYS THE SAME, maybe they differ by a couple thousamd yen. Talk about collusion. |

What I'm talking about is getting a price quote via e-mail or fax and taking it to the competitor to see if they'll match/beat said quote. |

Yes, but I have always found the prices are the same with every agency. There has been nothing to beat from the competition because the competition has the price fixed along with the rest of them. In the past 4 years I have been to Bali, the Philippines, Hawaii, Vietnam and Vancouver 3 times and in every instance I have never found any real difference between "competing" travel agencies. |

Yeah. The problem is... They just don't compete. |

I have had good luck with HIT travel.
They have good prices and are no nonsense. I was told that 'No.1 has the best prices', and went with them because a friend I am going to be travelling with used them. Although I haven't been disappointed with the price of the ticket, I haven't liked that they upped the fuel surcharge after booking, and made me 'apply' with some stupid form to get my ticket issued. A lot of silly hoops to go through.
I am going to use HIT for my next trip. |

ymmv For my flight home in August, after shopping around I found an agent who went 2 man lower than HIS and No1. - Tairiku Travel in Sugamo. They don't have English on their website, but the lady I talked to spoke well. |

I usually just use STA but this year I also shopped around A LOT for a ticket. I also found a travel agent whose price on a ticket to Riga (with the same airline) was 30,000 yen cheaper than STA! The travel agent is called 世一トラベル (Seichi Travel) and in Tokyo their office is in Jingumae about ten minutes walk from Shibuya station. The website is only in Japanese:

What is it with wait-listing in Japan? I have never been wait-listed in any other country, but it seems that every time I try to book a flight from Japan I get put on a waiting list. Do the big tour agencies block book seats or something? It also seems quite difficult (ie massively expensive) to book flights online in Japan too. Collusion collusion collusion! |

When are you trying to book flights? I suspect it is for Golden Week or July/August. The problem is that everyone has holidays at the same and everyone wants to travel! You have to book months in advance and then you won't be placed on a waiting list.

Compared to....? Again, for what time are you trying to book them? Yes, July and August is peak season so tickets will be expensive. |
