Well, pokey and eek, this is where you will have to take my word that I am not a recruiter! Wish I were, because it can be really lucrative, but unfortunately those plum jobs only go to the very well-connected. But yes, I have been in Oman for the past year. And yes, they are desperately looking for teachers here, and it's the perfect time of year to job-hunt.

I loved Taiwan for the experience I gained, for getting in touch with the rising Chinese language and culture and for getting a foot in the door in ELT. I hated it for the pollution and the overwork that goes with the territory if you do your job well. My first two years there were great, but after that it was a trial.

There were several reasons that prompted me towards Oman. It is a country of great natural beauty which is still very traditional, and naturally there is the connection with the Middle Eastern culture that is so contentious at the moment. From a professional point of view, the jobs here are in colleges and unis, so you can develop academically if you so wish. Also, teaching young adults is invigorating after years of kiddie fatigue. The sacrifice to rewards ratio is splendid compared to Asia, as you will easily see with a bit of research.

I won't deny that there are inconveniences: you are likely to live in a small town with a small-town mentality; there is always the political pressure from the situation in Iraq and now also Palestine; and being a goddess is mighty demanding. But I wish I had tried this sooner.

I strongly recommend you investigate the Oman and General Middle East Forums on this board if you are interested. You will find job postings for Oman on eslcafe and/or www.tefl.com. Best of luck.

Since I will be on holiday for the next month, my internet access will be unreliable, but do feel free to PM me if you need more info after mid-August.

ty kuberkat.

I will stick to my plan of going to Asia, if only to get it out of my system!

I will look into working in Oman definately as it sounds promising and if the time comes that i am sick of Asia (as many do seem to after a year or two) then it is good to know of a nice place to move on to.

Plus tbh I certainly cant help being intriqued by the whole "goddess" thing XD

Glad you are happy.

GL pokey, hope you (edit: WE!) find your (our) xanadu too.

Eek, Asia is a wonderful place to start, especially if travel is a priority for you. As long as you can maintain your sense of discovery, small sacrifices are all worthwhile. Also, many other regions demand experience that you can easily and happily earn in Asia. There are some unbelievable people and places that I would have been poorer without, especially from travel in SEA.
We all deserve our Xanadu, Shangri-La, Paradise, and if it lies in the pursuit of a mirage, so be it.

Just to let everyone know, Kuberkats description of the Middle East only applies to Oman Very Happy . Sure theres plenty of Western men and locals to hit on me, and they do, but they defintitely don't treat me like a goddess, more a piece of meat. Confused

Also there are TONS of Thai and Phillipino lassies here who take a lot of the attention away...granted they take away the guys looking for a quick screw too, so thats ok.

Thai police: Cdn woman admits killing her husband

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - A 48-year-old British Columbia woman in northern Thailand has admitted shooting dead her American common-law husband after arguing over family affairs, police said Tuesday.

Margaret Crane of Victoria was arrested Sunday by police after allegedly killing George Patrick Dubie, 52, a freelance journalist, in the northern city of Chiang Mai.

Witnesses told police the couple met at a restaurant in downtown Chiang Mai, about 580 kilometres north of Bangkok, and were having a heated argument when the woman pulled out a pistol and fired three shots before fleeing in a car.

Police later apprehended her.

"She admitted that she did it because she was angry and under pressure," said police Lieut. Ben Wongkrua. He described Crane as a housewife.

Police, who earlier misidentified Dubie as a Canadian, also said Crane told them that Dubie had beaten her and had affairs with other women.

Ben said Crane was being held on a charge of premeditated murder, for which she could face the death penalty.

Thats pretty awful.

I dont know if he really did beat her etc, but if he really did he was obviously a total pig.

She should have tried to have found another way than shooting the guy tho!

She must have known she would face the death penalty.

Horrible, sad story.

Geez.

Now I am reasonable pacifist, but jealousy can do strange things to a person. Hey, that coulda been me. Always been a wee bit partial to the idea of a crime of passion...
