I'm in South Korea right now and the idea of conflict or it being dangerous just sounds ludicrous to me. If North Korea did start a war, South Korea is where I'd want to be. North Korea is much more likely to bomb the US or Japan than their southern brothers. No one thinks all that much about North Korea down here. I remember talking to some of my middle school students and they actually kind of wanted a war to happen so the US would go in and take down Kim Jong Il and they could re-unify. Seriously, safety is not an issue in South Korea. It's one of the safest places you could go. Anyone who says otherwise has never been here and doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

You can save about US$1000+ a month in Korea.

About US$2200 a month gross wages - free housing, low taxes, free plane ticket.

And you can live in a city AND eat meat!
Is this a slam on Japan? You can eat meat there, too. Geez.

I don't think you're going to find many people who have lived in all of those countries so as to give you a real fair answer. It's good to see answers to specific questions, though, so please keep asking. I would also suggest reading this link, which describes living/working in Japan/Korea/Taiwan, even though some of the things about Japan are not 100% accurate.

Oh, and remember that in Korea you don't own your visa. The employer does. People often forget to mention that when they talk about rent-free jobs and saving money. I bring it up because of the many people who post about unscrupulous managers in Korea, and the potential to lose not only your job but your visa at the same time. In Japan, this does not happen; you can keep working until the visa expires (or you can renew it).
