I have been wondering what kind of songs I could use in the classroom also!

A conversation with my two lovely niece's aged 10 and 8 suggested I use "I wish I was a punk rocker" I thought this could actually work quite well and be used as part of a "I wish I was" lesson/presentation.

My niece's certainly seemed to enjoy it and were singing it to me as much as possible!

Which was nice..................

I saw this thread and I was thinking of the very same song. An exercise that I was set on my course was a reading lesson on a passage about punks. At the time I was thinking that this song would have been great to incorporate as the language was very clear... How about some Maisie Gray for the more advanced... its slow but even as a native speaker you need to think about what she is saying.. gives opportunity for colloquialisms as well

For the first couple of hours! Laughing

"New York, New York" for the mid-low beginners.

Works well as a listening exercise if played like Bingo (place the various lyrics in the boxes), then play the song and they mark off the lyrics as they hear them.

Here are a list of some sites that deal with using music as a teaching tool.

This blog talks about using one song in particular but the basic ideas can be used in most songs. I liked the idea of students writing a dialogue after the main activity.

By the way, did you realise that you can download a free karaoke player for a computer? It is also quite easy find songs in the karaoke format. If you happen to have access to laptop or PC to use in your classroom, having a karaoke contest could be a lot of fun. I haven't tried this, but I think it could work. Has anybody tried karaoke in the class?

I like using holiday related songs (usually included in a unit to learn about that holiday) and also songs I think are interesting. We recently did a Beatles module, as well as punk songs (Green Day, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) in the past.

my korean middle schoolers LOVED "all shook up" by elvis presley. but i only taught them the chorus.
they also really loved "hey mickey" and "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" with comes with a great lesson plan. (use it like boggle, and have them find words within the big word. team with the most words wins.)
