I brought my wife home in January. After 3 days she said she was going to see a friend. I haven't seen her or the $20,000 from our bank account since. (Police say there are many similar stories- from Ch 9's "A Current Affair", last week)

Bloody hell Colin . Bad luck there .
I voted 4 . I really like China as a place and as a place to teach . My University classes had a mix of students . Yes some didn't want to learn but there were plenty that did . A wonderful language to learn and some very interesting times enjoyed in China . I am probably moving to Europe to teach but I feel pretty sad about that and leaving China . If for any reason my plans in Europe fall through I'll be immediately booked on that Air China flight straight back in to Beijing. |

Forgot to mention earlier that I have all 5 years of "Babylon 5" and all 7 years of "Star Trek, TNG". I'm hoping to get "Deep Space 9" this time around. Yes, I love my dvd collection!!

Who needs CCTV when your leisure hours can be endlessly wiled away watching Starwars 1-4? Then again you would probably love the classic Frankenstein (1931), The Island of Lost Souls (1933), David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), Capricorn One (1978)), Demon Seed (1977), the results of germ-warfare (The Omega Man (1971)) and laboratory-bred viruses or plagues (28 Days Later (2002)), black-hole exploration (Event Horizon (1997)), and futuristic genetic engineering and cloning (Gattaca (1997) and Michael Bay's The Island (2005)) show the tremendous range that science-fiction can delve into.
Oh I forgot these beauties:
The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951), When Worlds Collide (1951), The War of the Worlds (1953), the two Hollywood blockbusters Deep Impact (1998) and Armageddon (1998)

Having "enjoyed" a vacation in the UK, I couldn't wait to get back to China!!
Why?
Everything is soooooo expensive: 2.50/3.00 for a pint of warm beer; Domino's Pizza (large) 20; MacDonalds ice cream 49p. and so the list goes on. A small bedroom in a not too clean hotel 80 a night.
Many, many, many very fat women of all ages (except for the Asian girls)
English I just cannot understand!
The pace of life is so slow and at night, just shuts down as everyone is either glued ot a TV set or in the local pub |

#5. fantastic experience for me.
I love my adorable students, the endless curiosities of geography, and my good fortune to be at a good, reputable school - the big factor. |

Just thought I'd look back on this post and see how the results are going. #5 is winning with 14 votes. I'm kinda surprised, as I thought that the majority of people would go for number two.
Very interesting. |

But almost a third of voters go for number 1 and 2 - almost a third of the vote - So newbies beware - it ain't just a bed of roses out here!!!!
If nothing else, since the majority of voters seem to have a positive experience, this small poll starts to question Clark Griswalds highly scientific theory that posters mainly come onto dave's to gripe - and the griping whiners far out number the content FT. Any comments on a kindy teachers observations Clark
By the way I'm a fiver |

Vikdk you just aren't willing to accept the fact that just because China is not everything you expected it would be that others just don't agree with you that it is a place of trouble and place to be avoided.
Perhaps you just need to get away from the computer a bit and get out and start experiencing China rather that spending everyday here on Daves posting quips to the experiences outlined by others. |
