Fresh air? Go into the mountains. Nantou is good and people are nice. If you are looking for some history, food, and air, Tainan is good.

Scooters are cheap! But remember, you can't go on the highway/freeway with it.

Thanks, Gifu. Any leads for work in or near those places? Is this where you were/are located?

I like my city of Taichung. It's in the middle of Taiwan and only 2 hours by bus to Taipei if you really need to go visit. It's a busy city but not as mad as Taipei and if you take the backstreets you could get away with riding a bike. Some of my friends live out near a place called Dakeng which is quiet, in the mountains and you can get your daily dose of fresh air and cycling free from crazy scooter drivers. It's only about a 20 or 30 minute drive into the centre of town from there.

If you are looking for somewhere to hang out that has some really cool and talented people in Taichung you could try Grooveyard which is above Frog bar in Taichung on Hua Mei West Street. The Frog bar is in the lonely planet guide. It's mainly a music bar but come along on Thursday nights for open mic night and there are plenty of people doing there thing, be it music, spoken word or whatever. You are bound to meet some people there who will be into illustrating and writing. My flatmate is a writer and I am sure he knows a few people.

Check out Taichung, it has plenty to offer the Western tastebuds as well as local culture, too. I have been here for nearly 2 years and have yet to be dissappointed.

PM me if you want more info.

Shaun
