| That's great, but the nearest Sam's Club is about a 7-hour bus ride away. |

No HEB nearby either?? They seem to carry a lot of American stuff.
The cheddar we got is delicious and old and strong but it was weird after eating all the Mexican cheeses with hardly any flavour and having a piece of cheddar...
It might be worth the bus ride?
One more thing about freelancing is - it's a great way to meet the neighbors and it's very personal so you make some really good friends of your students. We had some guys from the band Limite for a couple weeks, they disappeared too - damn. We were hoping for concert tickets they promised but oh well. We have a lawyer as a student as well so that's handy |

| No, though I've heard that a Gigante just opened a few months ago in Tehuantepec. That's only about 3 or 4 hours away... |

Sorry Cangringo, but you guys gotta get out of Monterry!
In my little town, we recently got a Bodega Aurrera. I try not to buy a lot of things there, but they do have somethings that just didn't exsist here before.
Another tip for LS is to ban together with your coworkers and begin to pester some little "ham and cheese shop" about their selection. We've done that with sucess here. We've got one shop that once a month or so gets a giant bulk cheddar block then we all go in a buy it up. They also regularly have a really good Goda, and some other things, like 3 liter bottles of Olive Oil, that the English department mostly buys from them. Also ask at some of the posher restaurants over near Tongalunga, who their suppliers are. There is problably a direct sales truck that comes in from Oaxaca, or maybe down the Costera from Acapulco with things for them and they might be able to set up a contact with you. Several of our teachers buy mixted salad greens from a restuarant supplier that way. It actually comes to the university once a week now to sell to professors! |

Funny you should say that, we want to get out of Monterrey because we want something smaller and more Mexican. I mean we live in a Mexican neighborhood but there are too many Wal-Marts and HEB's. It's nice to have the conveniences but we're looking forward to moving. That said, it is a very good starting place and there is lots of work here.
Hubby's parents are moving to Mexico soon and will end up in Hermosillo possibly or nearby. I have been reading that Hermosillo is extremely hot...is this really true...?? Where is a good place near there?? |
