Last year when I entered Mexico I got 90 days but my job didn't start until a month or so after that. I decided to go to Guatamala for a week, partly in order to get a new tourist card. But on my way out the immigration guy asked if I was coming back to Mexico at all. I said yes, but that I needed a new card with more time on it. He smiled at me and wrote 180 over the 90! Shocked I think he charged me 100 pesos. I was a bit worried that it would be a problem when I applied for my FM3, but they never questioned it. However, you'd be better to make it look natural, because this was pretty obvious.
