Actualyl not thats not what I was talking about, but your not looking to have a discussion, your looking to exalt yourself and preach a bit. making the best out of a bad situation is fine, when you have no choice in the matter that is. You misuinterpret simple sayings to suit your own very limited ideas. I don't recdal every saying not to make the best out of any situation, thats the duh factor, and so obvious as to be stupid to point out. Read all I have written, and take a class in how to listen and reason. To do something means just that, do something, like what I have said, to stop ignoring the problem, and just accepting it. I have already said what to do, don't ignore it. You are quite apathetic, and a liberal pin head to boot, which is a real shame. *Yawn* your not even worth talking to. You can PM me if you like, but I am afraid my opinion of you is too low now to continue a public dialogue, ignore time for you, good bye.

Seems like Robert, the original poster (who hasn't returned to this thread), should really rename his topic:

Some experiences of one teacher in one Chinese city

British? good lord, he's certainly not one of ours! thought the bally old chap was one of your boys.
Still, I had to sympathise with the poor blighter to some degree, after all nobody wants a good rogering on a foreign field now, do they?
Looks like a might be seeing you in a week or two, tally ho!

Where are the true facts I was promised? Ok, I bit. An FT who has a year and a half in China, possibly in one city only, is an Old China Hand who can give you the straight dope on a country of 1.3 billion people? I only did a year (may come back)so I won't go beyond calling myself an Expert of all things Chinese.

Don't get me wrong, I haven't lived anywhere that I didn't whine about. It is good exercise. But realize how ignorant it sounds to start making up statistics about 85% of Chinese people are this or that, or that Wenzhou is the worst. China is huge. There might be a place for you.

I hate deceiving titles: how about "My experience in Wenzhou, a Cautionary Tale? As I used to tell my writing students, write about what you know.

Nathan.....NathanRahl, you certainly are doing something about it..but you got your "wires" crossed cuz...to do something means to adapt your self to your work environment..and to accomplished the goal...not to self satisfy or to force change..you would do well to learn to set examples while holding a line as to what an employee is willing to do..I would guess from your post that you have had less than a successful time at dealing with this cultural and now it is time to lash out at any person who gives you advice or makes a comment that deter you away from self pity and the helplessness you may feel her at the hands of a layer of society
that has mistreated you. It is time to take responsibility for your own direction and time to stand on your own..not to enlist the help, in your ever so vague way, of those who have been stronger than you could be...and to Identify me as a liberal .... well that is just plane stupid and uninformed...

Robert,

I can relate to what you have said.

I have been disillusioned many a time.

After negative events, i have even left China for periods.

But, i continue to return, because of the possibilities..., because of the interesting things i can do here. I come from arguably the best city in the world, but i prefer to live in China. We can live heaven in hell or hell in heaven.

Don't give up on your dream. Is your 5 years up yet? You still have time, be proactive, go and work for a university, meet some babes.

If i was to give you the answer, then i would say get another job in a nice clean city in China. Make some new friends, be sincere, and you will attract like minded nice people.

Work a day and weekend job and save heaps. Hard work takes your mind off your problems, and as the bank account grows so does your confidence.

This is my experience.

I am sure that there isn't a gun pointing at your head; leave if you hate it so much.

I did.

I have to agree with Shan Shan I am afraid. It is very easy to paint a rosy picture when you are one of the few who has found some happiness and a good job here. The reality though is that most who come here do not have that final good outcome.

i'm on my fourth job in china now. all four have been at different levels of satisfactory (albeit with minor problems along the way). looks like i scooped up the good luck that three other teachers didnt get. nathan, you cant state something to be true if you cant prove it. and what you claim up above is impossible to prove.

It's a fact that 3 out of 4 people posting statistics on the internet are very talented and have developed a skill that allows them to type with their bumholes.
