"Moderation in everything" That is what I was always taught.
When young and wandering through the desert lands of Tunisia, Maroc and the Suez Canal, a dear friend and mentor told me
" Take not from them who have not. Give to them and curse those who never give, for they will not gain paradise. NEVER be afraid to ask, if you have nothing, you will be provided for."
This is not in our (Western) culture, but it rings true do you not think??
So, if you want to fast (as I do) then do so, just bear in mind that though the Muslim faith may not be as long lived as that of Christians, we all have a God to believe in and worship. We should be allowed to do this without prejudice.

Do we? Need we? That's a bit presumptuous. |

In this case I retract my previous comment. As for cultural sensitivity, there's nothing wrong with it in principle so long as it isn't worn as some sanctimonious badge with which to reprove others less holier than thou.[/quote] |

Oooh, very nice to see such thought-through comments. On a lighter note (though it may get serious if the situation persists), one aim of the fast is to cultivate empathy with those who experience hunger every day. Apparently this is being enforced among Ministerial staff on special contracts: although we are well past the official payday, college accounting departments have not yet received teachers' pay. For the footloose and fancy-free this is a minor inconvenience, but what about our colleagues who have families- particularly those who have been looking forward to lavish iftars? Once again there is proof that one should never expect to be paid before the middle of the month.
(Ministerial staff are paid in the middle of June for June, July and the first three weeks of August. The rest of August's pay is included in the September salary. For the record, September salaries were paid in the second week of October last year. That should get 'em on their knees ) |
