I just went through this procedure yesterday at the Bank of China.
Requirements: Foreign Experts Booklet with 70% written in the blank and the school (college) stamp on the page.
A copy of your passport and a copy of your signed contract in both English and Chinese.
If you have a BOC account you can deposit some in RMB and some in dollars or you can exchange it all for dollars, etc.
The only catch is that the bank must have dollars in the bank to exchange to dollars. Here in my small town this poses a problem sometimes. But generally, they have at least $50 and $100 denominations not $1, $5, or $10.

I agree that it's really easiest if you have a girl/boyfriend who can do it for you.
Before our trip to America, my wife went down to a bank and exchanged a LOT of RMB for more than 6000 USD with the Men In Black. We went into the bank lobby, they made a couple of calls, we went upstairs, and they did the exchange. It seemed totally professional, and at the same time totally balck market. It was actually kind of fun.
They ran our cash through a cash counter (one of those that throws out counterfiets), and ran the US dollars through a different but similar machine. They waited for me to inspect the bills (they evidently expected me to do so), and that was that. We got BETTER than the bank's exchange rate.
That wa IT. We were back on the street in less than half an hour, no hassles from anyone, and the US banks later accepted the money (no funny money in any of it). |
