Getting used to living in what they would have to live in back in Europe, New York etc, sounds like sweet music to the management of institutions like HCT, Zayed University. I think teachers with families would find it difficult to find anything to live in within their allowances in Abu Dhabi. Rent charge for even a modest flat i.e. 2 or 3 bedroomed is now above 85,000 dhs. Should teachers be expected to pay anything? I really don't know. What I do know is, is that high quality (something which these institutions pride them selves on) teachers will cease to come out to the UAE.

What kind of accomodation are you expecting? And would this be of the same standard you'd be able to afford back home as a teacher, or are you looking for something superior? All I am saying is that you shouldn't expect anything superior. A 3-bedroom flat is not exactly modest. No, teachers should not have to pay for their accomodation if it is stipulated in the contract that accomodation is provided.

If it gets them what a teacher in London, Hong Kong or New York could expect to get on his salary, there should be no complaining. (...... )Why should they expect to get anything superior to what they would get in an expensive urban area back home? And free of charge? .

ckhl seems to have missed the point about why people work outside their home countries. OK the job should be interesting - but people don't change countries just to live in the same way they could live back home. The bottom line is that teachers' salaries haven't kept up with inflation, and housing allocations haven't kept up with the increases in rents. Now, maybe some tertiary teachers live in small palaces, especially those who work for HCT in the smaller Emirates - but any overseas hire teacher in the UAE should be able to expect to live in a decent area in a place with enough rooms to accommodate their family. Doesn't have to be a huge villa. If the accommodation is substandard or commuting times are long then a higher salary should compensate for this: it counts as a hardship. Teachers should expect more than they get at home - employers need to realise that if it isn't worth people's while to come, then good professionals will simply stop coming or start leaving in greater numbers.
Good luck to all those Canadians who whizzed off to Qatar!

Yes, some expect to rough it. I would argue that it is not a given to expect a superior "lifestyle". Perhaps more money, yes. Otherwise there is little incentive unless you're a peace corps type, for example.

Smaller in population and less developed but not necessarily less pleasant to live in - depends what you want. Ajman, Umm al Qwain, Ras al Khaimah, Fujairah.
