The last time I had to leave the country, I paid fiskal, advanced to the immigration and was told by the official on duty that I was exempt from payment and to go back and claim a refund - which I did. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind this, but I think it had to do with being a KITAS holder. I have also been told on good authority that one fiskal payment is valid for up to six months if you are an expatriate and a year if you are Indonesian.

Since the start of 2006, people leaving on an EPO (exit permit only), which is issued only at the cancellation of a KITAS, have been exempt from paying the Rp1m fiscal tax. Previously not all schools knew this and gave the money, which came in quite handy to buy beer in Singapore. The real issue is having to pay this ridiculous tax in the first place, which the president long ago promised to abolish.

I left early March on an EPO, and didn't have to pay fiscal at Soekarno-Hatta. Friends who left in Jan. and Feb. had informed me they hadn't paid either. After March however, not sure when, another friend said he had to pay fiscal on an EPO in Batam! So much for trying to save money by going through Batam!

In June I left on an EPO from Soekarno Hatta and didn't have to pay.

So with this EPO thing, is that where you leave for good at the end of your contract, or where you leave temporarily while still holding a valid visa?

An EPO is issued at end of contract, and supposedly leaving for good.
