yeah, it's my guitar skills that are lacking.

for a guick read on dylan's life, go to wikipedia. the article is pretty thorough and mentions the motorbike accident.
and if possible watch the documentry "no direction home" (same one luckbox mentioned).

titles, huh? i hope you're looking for albums vs songs. so...ignoring greatest hits disks. i think the most popular albums are:
the times they are a changin'
highway 61 revisited
bringing it all back home
blood on the tracks

my personal favs? today are bootleg vol.1 & the times they are a-changin'.

but if you're new to dylan, i think the essential dylan (2000) and the bootlegs are probably the way to go. decide which era of bob you are & see the range of his style. going electric was a huge change. the first three (?) bootlegs are a mix of studio and live recordings, the next couple are from tours.

But you know what, Blonde on Blonde is an even better record(s). If he'd died in that motorbike accident after that, man, his legend would be all the more legendary. James Dean x 100.

Blonde on Blonde is probably his best album and it was recorded at the absolute pinnacle of his "legend". But if he'd died in the motorcycle accident the World would have been without a number of excellent songs and albums.

There would have been no "All Along The Watchtower" (and therefore no excellent Jimi Hendrix version of it), no "Lay Lady Lay", no "Knocking on Heaven's Door" (although I could've done without that), and far more importantly no "Blood on the Tracks" (almost as good as "Blonde on Blonde"), no "Desire", no "Love and Theft", no "Oh Mercy".

If it was a choice between those recordings or the "legend" status I'll take the recordings anytime.

There is a theory that the motorbike accident may have been overhyped, just as the "heart attack" was years later. Dylan was exhausted from his manic drug-fuelled touring and needed some rest before Albert Grossman put him out on tour again. The "No Direction Home" documentary suggests Dylan had been living off drugs and cigarettes while he was being constantly hounded by people who came to his shows just to hurl abuse at him. It's difficult to see how much longer he could have coped with that. Maybe the full story will one day come out in a forthcoming "Chronicles".

You implying Dylan couldn't play very well? I used to think that til I actually started playing guitar some 20 years ago. I still can't for the life of me get that finger pattern from Don't Think Twice down well.

Well, the guitar-playing on Don't Think Twice may be uncharacteristically difficult but that's probably because - sorry, to break this to you - it wasn't Dylan but Bruce Langhorne who played it on the album version.

Try searching for Blonde on Blonde and not getting hit with copious amounts of porn...

Ya, I'd sort of known about that, but thought it was one of those disputed rock history facts. Along the same lines as Jimmy Page playing the lead on the Kinks You Really Got Me.

Nonetheless, there are numerous examples of Dylan the guitar player. The first album is all him, if I'm not mistaken, and there's some pretty capable folk and blues guitar playing on there. But ya, there isn't a distinctive Dylan guitar trademark. His strength is his poetry and nack for seemingly simple, but highly effective melodies.

For those of you who haven't tapped into YouTube, well, get on it... it's great.

There are loads of great, old Dylan clips there.

Here's a couple to get you started:

Dylan performing With God on Our Side, live, BBC, 1964: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usab2PLfilE

Outtake from the film Don't Look Back (which I've wayched a zillion times): Gates of Eden, 1965, London: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ejbfmhWtPI

Enjoy....
