Mods, could you addd 'never' to the poll please, I could have sworn I added it originally, but it is not on there.

When making a poll you should always press the add button each time. This is not facetious, the point is that the last field won't be added to the poll even if filled in unless you press the add button.

Thanks Ali, that might have caused it, though I don't know why the mods can't rectify it now since I the OP have requested the change.

Sherri,

Yes, but many of my students don't sit every week with the same people nor in the same area of the classroom. If you meant to let students choose their seats on the seating chart in the beginning, yes that would be okay except for situations where students tend to chat too much to their friends, etc. That is why I sometimes prefer to make the choices random (by the student numbers in this case, shows the students that I am not favoring anyone in my choices).

I don't have a seating plan. I remember every face . Much to my students amazement I know every students face. I never forget them. I can still recall all of the hundreds of students I have taught. Is that normal?

I like Elephants suggestion-

You didn't include "never" in your poll. I never use a seating chart in my classes. It wouldn't serve any purpose in doing so. Generally, my students always sit in the same seats they chose on the first day of class. It doesn't matter anyway. I have my students fill out a separate attendance sheet in every class. They fold the paper in half and write their English nicknames on the front. This must be kept in front of them, on the desks and at all times. I will call on students sometimes in class using their English nicknames. I also use those attendance sheets to award participation points, extra credit, make notes etc. Sometimes I will kick students out of class for falling asleep, something I will NOT tolerate. If I catch them, I take the attendance sheet away and mark "absent." Attendance and participation are worth 20 percent of their grade. I've kicked out a few students this year and it sets an example for the rest of the class. Most of my classes consist of about 35 students of which about 75% are very difficult to teach because they have zero interest in learning English. I could make up a seating chart and these students would waste so much class-time trying to change it and acting like they don't understand or just plain refusing to cooperate.

i've had pretty much the same idea planned in my head but I haven't done this yet . Thanks for the kick Elephant. I'll do it next semester !!

For my large classes I also have attendance sheets that students fill in every class. I collect them at the end of the class, so they don't get "lost". The attendance sheets also have their test scores on them which they fill in themselves. I collect the tests, so they never know if I check or not. 99% of the time they are honest. They always know where they stand, their scores and attendance. If students are quite late they don't get their attendance sheet. A little late is OK, but i write late" on their sheet. I am bad with names, but this sheet has their names on it so when I walk around, I see it which helps me remember them.
I also call their names out at the beginning of class and hand them their sheet of paper. This helps me remember their names and eliminates the likely possibility of their friends calling out their name for them. I have some classes of 70 students and I have 400+ students at the moment.
