				| We had an applicant once in the same situation Sam describe. He arrived with no passport. When we told him, he'd have to get one ASAP to process his work visa, he tried his darnest to dodge questions. Then he left in the night, sliding a note under one of the other teacher's door... | |

				| Mapache, the first part of your message referred to a recent tragedy and we know why he was in Mexico. That part of your message could not be interpreted as being in jest. The questions in the second part could be taken any other way it suits the reader. I was pointing out how it is pretty difficult to avoid taxes and child support while working legally in Mexico, something people considering this avenue might not realize. Nothing bossy about it, if you were referring to my post. Simply meant to be informative in response to your comments.

	  | The sad story of John Addis (aka Charlie Petterson) in Chiapas makes me wonder why gringos (as well as the rest of us) are in Mexico. A gringo friend told me that most gringos in Mexico have a story to tell and are there for a reason like avoiding alimony, fleeing from income taxes, misdemeanours or the like. He said he had a high salary in the US and when his company downsized and laid him off, the courts there would not relieve him from paying his ex-wife $1,500 per month alimony even though he had no job and she had a $80,000 per year salary there. His solution was to simply go to Mexico where his salary could not be garnished. | | |

				| Hy M I wonder if we had the same guy apply here-we had exactly the same situation. This guy had a prety good resume and was apparently a former lawyer from Edmonton. The school gave him his letter to give to immigration and he started the process, apparently. It wasn't till he just vanished that we found out form immigrtion that he didn't have a passport and had tried to talk them into doing the paper work with his drivers licence.

I think that 'crazy/outrageous esl teachers we've met in Mexico' would merit it's own thread...

				| Oh what a great idea. Living examples of "how not to" succeed in Mexico. | |

The floor is yours, D. Why not start the thread? See how well the Looniest Teacher thread is doing in the GD?

				| That thread's still going? I'll have to have a look. There's some hilarious stories on there. I'll see what I can come up with.
THere's just too many contenders. The three hundred pound manic depressive who didn't bathe for weeks at a time and hung a sign on his office door saying 'beware of dog' and literally growled and yelled at his helpless students?
Or the mid 50's insane California space case nympho who shacked up with a local coke dealer and walked around naked in front of students? I recall a staff meeting in which she blurted out 'god Mexican men have such nice cocks'.
 It's a long list.
Actually its kinda fun meeting all these charachters.

				| Our guy was a Texan. And REALLY REALLY wanted to use just his birthcertificate to process his FM3. He also convientely had a surname as his middle name so here in Mexico it was fairly easy for him to become a new persona. Pretty good resume, had taught English and Spanish on either side of the boarder for a number of years. He had the nevre to write me a year later asking if we had any openings! | |

				| We used to have a house in DF to provide accommodations for the teachers working with us...wayyyy back now in 2001. One teacher who lived there seemed to be a little stir crazy inside the house. Had this habit of going up and down the stairs, endlessly. Each time he'd reach the top or the bottom, he'd huff, act like he'd forgotten something, and go back up or down. Would do this 10, 20 times in a row. He also had a thing for checking locks and doorknobs every few minutes, making sure they were closed/locked or something. He went back home to Australia after 3 weeks.
I've got more stories, but I want to hear others first.

				| Years ago I worked for a school that had hired a teacher who prided herself on not having worn shoes til she was 13. She had studied Social Geography over a number of years in different universities because she said it was easier to follow the Grateful Dead that way. She was also shacked up with the local pot dealer. I walked past a class one day and she was teaching..."This is an eating fork, this is a drinking cup."
I moved on to another school but heard that she was finally let go after coming to high enough to have no hesitation about lifting her skirts and showing that, no, she had no underwear on.

				| Don't worry Melee, there's plenty more where those came from! Your time will come! But yeh, it WILL be hard to top that last story! Sheesh, no wonder schools are leery of hiring foreign teachers! | |
