Ooops, I guess my last post was too strong. I didn't mean to imply that it was always bad to apply for jobs online. It's generally how I get my jobs, and I've only been burned once. (But oooooooh, it still stings!) I generally prefer to search online because I like the security of knowing that I have something waiting for me at the other end, but with Chile in particular so many people were screaming, "Nooooo! Noooooo! There are so many jobs here!"
And because of the scarcity of online ads, as MELEE mentioned, it's hard to apply online in Latin America.

I agree, though some places do. That's why I made the Latin American job list. If you know of places to add, let me know. |

Does anyone have teaching experience in Bolivia? And if so, how did you come across your job...internet or in person? I am planning on heading down there and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience teaching in Bolivia and could give me some advice...
Thanks |

I also am thinking of making the jump from Asia to South America. I am in Japan right now and find the money vs. cost of living thing manageable but it prohibits me from travelling or forces me to live fairly frugally.
I am really interested in heading to South America but totally clueless. Perhaps Brazil is booming but I am interested in learning Spanish rather than Portuguese (though that could change if Brazil proved THAT much better a place to go)
At first I was leaning towards Chile since it seemed to have the highest standards of living and offered a great combination of mountains and ocean. Lately I have been taking a look at Argentina as well. Some of the things that I am curious about:
1) quality of life, Japan is a cramped concrete jungle, but it is still relatively clean, very safe, and the services are efficient and reliable. Also the people rarely jerk foreigners around here which is nice. How "nice" are things where you live and how do they compare across South America?
2) Excitement, Japan is nice but the people are mostly OLD and the nightlife and arts scene are not nearly as exciting as I hoped (though I still have a lot to learn) Basically if you are not in Tokyo than you might as well resign yourself to getting second rate everything or having to wait for a travelling show to come through your area. Even in Osaka (12mil. +) it is rather dull. This is why I am now leaning toward Argentina, it's arts and music scene seem a LOT more exciting. It also seems a little more cosmopolitan than Chile. Is that a fair description? What about smaller cities(300k- <1.5 mil) do they have a lot going on?
3) Money, I don't care too much but I would like to be able to live a little more comfortably than I do in Japan. I would like to be able to have fun AND save rather than have to choose one or the other. I am not too gung ho to send money back to Canada but I would still like somewhere where the currency is competitive and possibly going up unlike the long declining yen.
Any help or ideas or anything would be greatly appreciated. I still have 7 months left on my contract and may even stay another year in Japan but I am desperately trying to find out everything I can about S. America. thanx |

South America, the cost of living is low.. but so is the pay. You won't be able to make much there either for traveling. It would be better to bring some cash with you to afford travel.
Brazil booming.. nowhere is really booming, booming for English. So take your pick. However, I personally found Brazil to be a real fascinating place generally speaking.
Your Chile interests. All good, but its not really a dynamic arts scene by any means.. definetely not for what Japan is well-known for. I was surprised to see Santiago be a bit more kitsch in the art department. But the economy is good there, so that stability would be there. I also didn't find Santiago to be all that exciting of a city. There are quite a few leafy parks and places to sit around. People are real laid-back, much more than anywhere else in Latin America.. in the sense I felt quite safe and didn't have to have my guard up so much.
Excitement. Yeah, Argentina would be better than Chile. If you really really want excitement.. then Sao Paulo, Lima and Bogota would be the three most cosmopolitan cities.
$. Not much money in South America. |
