Bingo...that's why it surprises me to hear about some difficulties with migra in other states and cities.

| I was told that it would take about 15-20 days to process an additional employer. When I went there last week I was told that it would take 30 days because of the holiday season. I did a change of address which only took 4 days to do. Honestly, most of the foreign teachers that are here seem to be on FM-T's. Might be those are more the backpacker types. You can come on a 180 day FM-T and check out the jobs and see if you really like it here before investing in a FM-3. Why? Because if you quit your job, want to add an employer, or move you have to report all of these changes to INM. If you are on a tourist card you can pick up plenty of work. That would usually mean teaching business classes, teaching in a language school(proabably a smaller one), or giving private lessons. Most of the large chain schools seem to do things more by the book. This includes Wall Street, Berlitz, and Interlingua among others. I do know that some schools don't seem to care or look the other way. I asked at Quick Learning and they don't care if you are on a tourist card. You have to take a 1 month unpaid training with them no matter what qualifications you already have. Many schools have never hired a foreign teacher and simply have no experiance with immigration, or even know about how to do the paperwork for a FM-3. Some schools may not be on the complete up and up, but I've never had a serious problem getting paid. |
