The crimes against foreigners is over-reported. I've lived here since 2002 and have never been the victim of a crime. I've heard stories of people being pickpocketed, but never firsthand. There isn't really much to do in terms of activities, but you can find things to do...hiking, shopping, day trips to other parts of the city/outside the city, day trips to hong kong, theme parks, eating out, spa trips (the massage/facial/foot massage places here are great, and not ALL of them are full of prostitutes)...you just have to have an open mind about how to keep yourself occupied. If you like nightlife, it's here as well.
I'd second the Longgang area info...much more industrial and not much to do there. I'd rank it up there with Bao'an in terms of "Wilderness."
Check out my Shenzhen page here:

I know it's not complete, but if anyone out there would like to add info, I'd be happy to hear from you...PM or otherwise. |

Well, I maintain that crime is a serious enough issue no matter what you have personally expeirenced - others are less lucky. I once watched as a thug armed with an iron rod beat up a suited businessman in public (behind the Panda Hotel on the corner of Dongmen Luand Jiabin Lu) with 20 construction workers looking on; there also was a tense standoff between Uighurs and the cops one day - not out in Bao'an but in downtown.
In Luohu, many people "lose" their valuables; one African was held up and made to part with his money on the walkway on the second floor of the railway station.
Those incidents happened in the last century, tobe sure, but the situation hasnot improved since; some 3 years back the P.L.A. was called in to assist the P.S.B. in maintaining law and order...and you tell us the safety of people is perfect?
There are dangerous areas and there are many areas that are not dangerous; if you have doubts just ask a Hongkonger what they feel aboutShenzhen... not a rosy picture according to most of them. |

It's a bit of cultural desert but...hey...what can you expect from a city that didn't exist until recently.
Excellent nightlife if you are into that however and plenty of places to enjoy yourself. Remember a sports bar in Shekou (Bill's?) which served pints of Carlsberg or Tiger beer for about 15RMB so your thirst should be quenched if need be easily enough.
There are some amusement parks as well (Window of the World is worth a visit for sheer tackiness and the chance to ride a camel in Guangdong!) but to be honest it is a place to go for the money. Everyone knows that and including the Chinese. As the richest city in China according to salary (except Shanghai as I've just read!) you should be able save money there too. Jobs can pay very well but it is finding them that is the problem.
Have to say that I found it to be rather a characterless place but then that is true of many Chinese cities which have experienced a boom in all those identikit modern buildings which all look the same.
What is that Chinese saying? Something along the lines of if you think you have read a lot go to Beijing if you think you have seen rich go to Shenzhen? Can't remember how it goes but it does sum up the place well.

Shenzhen is not so bad as made out above. It IS a bit soulless, but in my view -- I lived there for two years -- it's the best city in Guangdong. |
I'd suggest Zhuhai and some others with a bit of natural beauty (like Zhaoqing) are much nicer places than Shenzhen. Then again...it depends what you want really. They won't pay as well, aren't so near Hong Kong and aren't quite as developed or have the same western comforts available.
Personally I preferred Guangzhou to Shenzhen but to be honest both are rather acquired tastes. I'm not sure why I preferred GZ...just seems to have a bit more history although they seem to have done their best to eradicate as much as possible yet I still liked the walk around the Shamian Island part and there are a number of museums. More universities as well so there tends to be benefits from that. However, some would hate both Shenzhen and Guangzhou! |
