Cheers guys, I'm sure I mentioned it before. Must have been a different forum. Embarassed
Anyway I don't want to hijack HMAF's thread.... but which tartan did you wear?

I wear the Royal Stewart... it's not my fault my surname is English.

( if you have a non-Scottish name then I think there are 4? tartans you can wear... even the English... but there are those who argue that the kilt is the invention of the 18th cent. englishman.)

the kilt is most likely the invention of Sir Walter Scott, who wanted to impress the slackjawed kraut we had for a king when he came up to Edinburgh to gawp at the locals..
And I wear the tartan of the McGregors.
Congrats on getting hitched - though I wouldn't like to be taken up the Bosphorus on my wedding day. Very Happy

BTW, I have worn my kilt to work, when my kilos allow. Mine is Farquharson, amazingly enough. nice, lots of green. Our dress code so far does not preclude kilts. should it?

The kilt was banned by the Brit government in 1747. Sir Wal-turd was born in 1771. For the benefit of anyone who's daft enough to believe the Anglo-Saxon myth about the kilt being a modern invention, here's a quote from the Act of Proscription:
And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That from and after the first day of August, one thousand seven hundred and forty seven, no man or boy, within that part of Great Briton called Scotland, other than shall be employed as officers and soldiers in his Majesty's forces, shall on any pretence whatsoever, wear or put on the clothes commonly called Highland Clothes (that is to say) the plaid, philibeg, or little kilt, trowse, shoulder belts, or any part whatsoever of what peculiarly belongs to the highland garb; and that no tartan, or partly-coloured plaid or stuff shall be used for great coats, or for upper coats; and if any such person shall presume, after the said first day of August, to wear or put on the aforesaid garments or any part of them, every such person so offending, being convicted thereof by the oath of one or more credible witness or witnesses before any court of justiciary, or any one or more justices of the peace for the shire or stewartry, or judge ordinary of the place where such offence shall be committed, shall suffer imprisonment, without bail, during the space of six months, and no longer; and being convicted for a second offence before a court of justiciary or at the circuits, shall be liable to be transported to any of his Majesty's plantations beyond the seas, there to remain for a space of seven years.

Are you suggesting there's something inherently wrong with the Turkish population that makes marriage more difficult here than anywhere else in the world?

Thanks for the history lesson grahamb. Can I suggest a great book. Capital of the Mind-how Edinburgh changed the world by James Buchan. A fascinating read.

several years ago I read a book called How the Irish Saved Civilization, mostly how the monasteries preserved the books by copying them. it was quite interesting. I don't know if the monks wore kilts...

Hittites wore kilts too. many ancient cultures did. Kilts are simple and practical, allowing easy access for most bodily functions.
