Again this thread was intended to discuss wacky modern japanese foods not an invitation to disparage traditional foods developed as a legitimate way for everyday people to get the nutrition they need. Get hungry enough I'm sure you'd love a bowl of natto topped with tororo (I just hope I never get that hungry) |

I heard that Japanese people recycle 65% of all cans and bottles, the highest percentage in the world for industrialized countries.
Though I don't have the exact article to back it up, a quick search on google lead to some other recycling articles.

Let's face it, all industrialized countries are extremely wasteful. Japan just does it in ways that baffle many of us foreigners. Anyone who points the finger over this issue is seriously misinformed. |

mutton is the dietary staple of mongolia, so i think you're right Atlas, the genghis khan candies are probably the lamb-flavoured ones mentioned. regardless, sounds totally gross! my first time in japan i went on a shopping spree in the confectionary aisle of the grocery store (oreos with japanese packaging to send home! earl grey tea flavoured candies to eat after tea!)  |

being from toronto myself, i remember hearing about a year ago that the health dept was banning vendors from having mayo at the stands...a bottle of mayo sitting next to a barbeque, on a hot day, has the potential to become a botulism factory pretty quickly... |

Anpan (bean paste rolls) are yum. They just take a bit of getting used to. I seriously miss those when I am outside Japan.
Corn and mayonnaise rolls I'll agree with you on. |

Crimes against food? Japans done more to make my tastebuds explode with happiness than anywhere else.
If I had to choose anything it would have to be mochi. I don't like the idea of mixing food and fear. Same goes for Fugu. |

Oh yeah, well what about that Nagoya/Aichi specialty -
Ogura toast? (anko on toast with butter)
or
Ogura-cream sandwich - a favourite of mine. |

In any Chinese influenced area they're easy to get. I loved eating them in both Taiwan and Hong Kong before I moved to Japan. |
