| When I go to work in the morning I often see the bin men. In the UK binmen are paid quite well as it's a job nobody wants to do-alot easier to be on the dole- How much do bin men in Turkey get ?I am guessing it is less than EFL teachers.... alot less. |

Did you see that the minimun wage has just gone up -I worked it out as about 140 pounds a month.
The day before I got back we had our flat cleaned-the kapıcı's wife spent the whole day cleaning it-she got 30YTL-that is what, 11 pounds for a day's work. |

Thrifty, doesn't she deserve a pay rise? We had this conversation on Chrissie day. My mate is appauled that his mrs is now offering the cleaner 50 a day when another friend with the same cleaner pays only 40(for a bigger flat)
Zam geldi.
Come on thrifty be generous with the petro dollars.
I believe a sheep for Kurban is 400 ytl and a cow is 3000 ytl.... thats alot of cleaning.(or is 300 and 4000 respectively?)
btw, if you don't like the sight of blood don't go to car parks on Arife. They are being used to sacrifice animals. Another winning idea from the local govt. |

Your mates are obviously living in expensive parts of the city.
Justme-do you have a cleaner and how much do you pay her? |

It depends how you define foreigner. Lots of Armenians and easy access to pork in Ucler supermarket. Kurtulus Cad. is a goldmine for all foreign products. As for a TEFL bar... not yet. However I and my 3 best friends all live within a few hundred meters of each other and we meet up in Dede's place... an old skool Birhane... 3 ytl a big beer. As you know though Osmanbey and Nisantasi are 5 mins away. It has a neighbourhood feel to it yet is only 10 minutes from the centre of town.
On an unrelated subjuct. Migros sells Angora wine for 13 ytl. But La Cave in Cihangir sells it for 7.50..... guess what we drank on Chrissie day |

In my old house in Bakırky we had a cleaner. She wanted 20YTL for half a day (3-4 hours) and that was fine.
Until she helped herself to all my jewellry and Walkman and some cash and some other stuff.
So I've been hesitant to get one since then. I'd expect to pay 20-30 for a half-day's (up to 4 hours) work. It's not like our house is very big or very hard to clean.
Thrifty, I think 30 to clean a house that no one had been living in is fair. Anyway, if she'd wanted more, she would have asked for it, and it probably doesn't take a full day to clean your flat... |

| I find prices to be a lot different out Buyukcekmece way. For example I had lunch in a local kebap restaurant today and the price just astonished me. I had soup, 2 lahmacun with 2 small plates of salad and a free acılı ezme and tea-5YTL. I tipped them but I wonder how much that would cost elsewhere. I am out of touch with prices though. |

| Of course I had bread-freshly made pide in their oven. It is impossible to have a meal here without bread. Bread with a roast, bread with a baked potato, bread with rice, bread with pasta. |

I would happily pay that for a full day's cleaning plus ironing. The 20 in Bakırky didn't include ironing or windows, though it did include thieving.
If I had a cleaner stay more than 4 hours, I would pay her more than 30. But, as I said, our flat isn't very big, there aren't any child messes (yet!) and if she stayed more than 4 hours, it would mean she was cleaning something nasty or difficult that wouldn't get done very often in any case... |

Ok, I see I've been robbed in a different way. I paid 55 ytl for a huge , not so dirty apartment. Out in Beylikduzu.
She did the windows, and all the deep cleaning i.e. bath, floors, rugs etc. However no ironing. I have a huge 5+1 place with only little old me.
I only wanted half a day as my place is NOT that messy. What I really wanted was the ironing and organization, however good old husbands auntie insisted no half day and no ironing. Just as they insisted I live in this oversized apartment. |
