Recommendations for Int'l banks in Taiwan ?

If you are looking for ATMs that will take your CDN card, simply look for the ones that display any of the symbols you see on the back of your ATM card (eg cirrus, maestro, plus etc). Any number of different banks' machines will work, though you may have to look a little harder/ go to another town if you live in a smaller center. As mentioned, the fees will be very high, so make larger withdrawals than youthink you need so you don't have to make them often.

You would most likely be set up with an account by whatever school you're hired by. They probably do all their banking with a specific bank, and as such would want you to have your banking at the same place for ease of paycheque deposit.

I've decided to be safe and take out a loan of $4,000-$5,000 CAD to keep me afloat when I arrive to Taipei, get settled, and find a good school.

How much of it should I convert in to NT before I arrive, and what amount should be in travellers cheques? I'm not sure how safe it is to carry large amounts of cash. Also, is it worth it transfer funds into U.s Travellers cheques? I heard it is easier to cash out in TW and that there's a bank that does this for free. Is it worth converting CAD to U.S to NT? Will I lose out on exchange rates and is it worth the hassel?

All I can say is, Wow! I have to admire your commitment to this adventure.

You should have no problem exchanging Cdn TCs into NT. I'd keep a thousand in cash and convert the rest to TCs. Wiith this budget, you will last a long time before needing a paycheck. Which is good because I think it'll need a long time before you get one.

Good luck! See you at the ESL Cafe Happy Hour.
