What Cleopatra really means is that KSA is a pleasant place to vegetate in when you've passed it.

I tend to agree, but would add the caveat that I have always had three months paid vacation a year at least whilst working here. I am not at all sure it would be so pleasant if you could only leave three or four weeks a year.

Actually, no, that is not at all what I mean.

A bit short on the self-knowledge front today, eh?

Or should I amend the statement to "for those who are past it, or have never been at it in the first place"?

Have you ever met Cleo, SJ? If not, you're rather talking through your... umm... hat...

What is it about certain male posters who feel the need to try to belittle women they don't even know?

Answers on a message board, please. Preferably before this thread gets zapped.

Ah Cleo... you know that a debate on that issue would only get the thread zapped anyway. Laughing

Fair enough. Perhaps we should just take it from the horse's mouth - so to speak. Perhaps those men whose "egos" require supercillious attempts at satire:

Most people come to Saudi when they, or their livers, or their pockets, are past the delights of bars, restaurants, discos and night clubs.

A certain number have never experienced such delights, or have no desire to do so.

I was merely wandering which category Cleo fell into.

Apparently however she floats above the common heard of humanity, rather like the statues they carry around Mediterranean villages on religious festivals.

Hmmmm .well leaving aside the politics and squabbling I am still undecided. I can,as Cleopatra put it, maker a life for myself and I enjoy my own company and, strange as it may seem, I remain idealistically optimistic about teaching.
For me the main attraction of the KSA was the length of contract ...1 year as opposed to 3 years in the UAE. I like options.

Dear me, somebody has a Rub Al Khali sized chip on their shoulder!

I'm wandering (sic) just why that might be.[/quote]

What I like about my job in Saudi is that I have lots of time to myself. Time I can do something with. Or just sit around and BE.

On my now rare visits to what some call "The West" I am appalled at how people spend all their time running around in circles.

A worthy aim, but it's easier said than done.

For you Rhodes Scholar types out there I'd recommend To Have Or to Be by Erich Fromm, a book that deals with this (among other things.) I read it years ago (when me noggin was still in good working order) and I'm still influenced by the ideas today.

To Have Or to Be: 8 used & new available from $4.45 from Amazon.

Oh, I agree with that!

I've never been one who feels she has to be "doing something" at all times. Particularly when that 'something' often involves such - to me - pointless activities as prancing around in a gym or paying 10 Euro for a drink in some bar which doesn't even provide adequate seating.

Give me a fast(is) internet connection, a holiday to plan and a shelf full of top-notch non-fiction, and I'm happy. Well, most of the time...
