Does your supervisor know that you do this?
If it became known that you marked students absent when they were physically in the classroom and they complained ,you are the one who would get the foot up the backside, well at my place anyway . Zero for non participation does not deter them in any way !
You have to physically collect the phones at the start of each lesson or ban them . |

Yeah, my supervisors liked the idea! Especially the ones who I shared classes with, because the punishment effectively banned cell phones in all the lessons we shared, not just mine. It seemed a lot of the effectiveness was that they could get silently 'caught,' and there would be no cat and mouse games or arguments about whether or not they were really using their phones. In my second semester there, I extended the punishment to include all unnecessary electric gadgetry-- MP3 players, digital cameras...
When we got a new rektr this year, we were informed that were not, in fact, legally allowed to mark students absent if they were physically present. But students don't really know about this, so I just mark them 'fake absent'-- it looks like an absence on the attendance sheet should they get ahold of it, but I know not to include it in my weekly absence counts. It has the same effect. You're right they don't care much about participation-- not until they start nearing the end of the year and realize that it has an effect on whether or not they can pass...
Another good punishment is taking a student's phone and giving it to an American or Australian teacher to call home. Of course, the time diffferences make it tricky to actually phone someone without waking them, but it's effective. |

Nope, just one really big bun that's getting fat. It seems massive to me because there's this basketball where there used to be nothing, but MIL's still not totally sure I'm not starving it...
On the other hand, where strangers used to look at me like they were delighted to see me and the bump, now they give me a nervous look like they're afraid my water's gonna break at their feet at any moment. They didn't even crowd me in the ATM line yesterday! |
