Sam
In my part of the country, Poblanos have the worst reputation, but Chilangos are very close runner ups. However, I don't know of a drink named after any Mexican city, but then I'm not big on cocktails, I guess it's time for me to start hitting the clubs?
I do know that many years ago I asked a Mexican friend what you call people from Monterrey. She immediately replied, tacao. She was from Puebla herself... Confused

oops, that beep is a common name for mixed drinks, I think this auto-sensor thing is a little over the top.

Poblanos top the list? Yay for chilangos, knocked off the perch. Round here, veracruzanos or yucatos have the worst reputation.

I am embarassed by the stinginess of some people. If you can afford to be on holiday in mexico during the winter, than you can afford to leave a respectable tip. My approach has always been that the tip I leave behind has more of an impact on their wallet than mine. I tip well and I tip often. There are also a lot of vacationers that buy the all inclusive packages that think that because it states "all inclusive" that they don't have to tip, but they expect the wait staff to fall all over them just because they are there. Cheapness knows no nationality. Canadian, American or Winterpegger, there is always a cheap sucker in every crowd....

I went to Sharm el Sheikh alone on an all-inclusive package. The first night I was there, a male employee called my hotel room at 1:00 am in an attempt to engage in a little pillow talk. From that point forward I was constantly sexually harassed for the duration of my trip. I'm not talking about whistling- I'm talking about being humiliated in front of other guests by vulgar remarks about my "chest" (this site beeps out the synonym beginning with "b"!) or having the male staff in the dining room compare breadsticks to their penises. I actually slept with the lights on because I was afraid that hotel staff would try to enter my room at night. I decided not to tip anyone until the day of my departure, so that I could only tip those who didn't sexually harass me. In the end I took all the money I would have used to tip everyone and divided it amongst three bus boys in the restaurant. I also tossed down a few bucks for housekeeping, although that guy creeped me out too (every time I was in the shower my phone rang, and when I got out to answer I'd find a dead line and the housekeeping cart outside my "cabana"... that was kind of odd). I would never go all-inclusive alone again (I did it that time because two weeks before I left Italy I decided I really wanted to see the Red Sea, but all my friends had to continue working), but if somehow I found myself in the same situation I would probably tip the same way. Only at the end of the trip, and only to those who consisently treated me with basic respect.

I'm talking Egypt as it relates to people tipping in all-inclusives.

I am surprised someone here mentioned the Japanese tipped really well. If they tip at all, I imagine it would go like this: Japanese man holds wallet open for the Mexican waiter to extract what he thinks is a suitable tip, then bows as a thank you. The Mexican bows back and later laughs to his friends about how he got a $100 tip.
In Japan, there is no tipping for anything. If I left a tip at a restaurant they'd probably chase me down the street to return it to me.

I don't know, I usually tip 10% as a matter of course. If the service is bad, I tip nothing. When I was in Thailand, I never tipped, the tip was always given back to me. The staff might earn $120 a month for 6 all days of work every week. 100 pesos a day doesn't sound that bad of a wage for a waiter, isn't that 3000 pesos a month? Add some tips and you might be pushing 4000 to 5000 pesos a month. How many jobs on ESL cafe for Mexico advertise for teachers paying the same amount?

I was given a good drubbing several months back for blasting a job paying that much.....

Yeah, and add no tips and you're pushing 3000.

Good question, though; how many EFL schools do advertise 4-5000 pesos per month? The only one I can recall seeing that low is New York School of English, and even they offered room on top of 5000 - and they've been lambasted by many for offering such a low wage.

However, to get those numbers, waiters would be working 7 days a week and probably at least 9 to 10 hours per day. I don't think many schools paying that amount would expect that many days/hours from their teachers.

The minimum wage for a waiter was about 45 pesos a day in Region C last time I saw the document published.

I hunted down the link, and it hasn't been updated yet for 2007 but it does show the minimum wage guideline for 2006.

I wonder why the Winnipeggers (!) decided not to tip. Perhaps they were so drunk that they forgot about it. In the interests of justice that Mexican waiter should be invited to express his opinion on the matter here on Daves.

Has anyone here dined in a restaurant in Winnipeg? Are tips expected to be given there? Or, as Guy wrote, do the restaurants charge extra?
