I was wondering what you EU residents of Turkey think about their application to join? Doesn't anyone appreciate what sort of impression this sort of things makes?

I'm glad the US didn't shut down Comedy Central when Colbert said that Jefferson was a "slave-banging, Hitler-loving *beep*."

My students'll be pissed off. They're always talking about videos on you tube.

"Beep"?

None of the Turkish English newspapers are reporting about You Tube being blocked.

I guess after the tragedy of Dink's murder, it's appropriate we have something this farcical to emphasize the asterisk that accompanies the word "democracy" when used to describe Turkey.

Ref. Turkish Daily News 6th March 2007

Quote:
Turkish Press Yesterday
Turkish-Greek war over You Tube
VATAN
You Tube's Web site, where millions of videos are watched every day, has turned to be the ground for a Turkey vs. Greece video war, read yesterday's Vatan on its front page. The daily reported the duel started after a video that claimed Greek pilots downed Turkish F16s. some Turks replied to this with a film claiming homosexuality comes from Ancient Greece. It also claimed Greeks retaliated by broadcasting a video that consists of insults against Ataturk. Vatan also reported that thousands of people are now protesting the Web site because of the video, which contains insults both against Ataturk and against Turks

I bet you can still get youtube in Greece though.

Edit: I thought I'd be clever and check Google (as they are now the same company). Google videos are generally still available, but not the ones mentioned in the article, even though they are listed.

My cynical student this morning said 'we can't get youtube but we can still get pornotube, what sort of country is this'? (I had never heard of pornotube until he mentioned it)

Before long they'll have banned chat rooms, Myspace and the BBC. Then we'll all have to do some work.

Seriously though, how can anyone think this is a good thing? Now the whole world can take the p.iss out of Turkey, and Turkey will never know.

^ Baba are you suggesting that Turkey is full of w@nkers?

Banning youtube is a bit extreme. Who actually banned it?
Is this an extension of article 301?

(when I was in Qatar loads of various site were blocked. My mate was well upset because the Anglia car owners site was blocked Rolling Eyes )

According to the bbc
Quote:
The clip prompting the ban reportedly dubbed Ataturk and Turks homosexuals.

So if we were to have a discussion about Ataturk's fondness for young boys, would we also get banned?

Craig is on ifilm-- I know this for sure because i've been off work with the flu for three days and have watched about a year's worth of Jon Stewart and Craig Ferguson on ifilm.

PostPosted: Thu Mar 08, 2007 3:07 pm    Post subject: Youtube ban and proxy servers Reply with quote

Hello, my name is Kestane and I am a Youtube'aholic.
I am having serious withdrawls. I want to confess that last night I tried to find alternative ways to get my fix.

Someone told me about proxy servers (servers that allow people to surf the web without showing a location, IP address or any other identifying information)...does anyone know about them. I tried a couple of free proxies on the web and could easily access the website and find videos, but I couldn't watch them due to script/quick time errors.

Anyone got better advice.
