You get the midgets, I'll bring the cocaine. |
Does one snort, smoke or swallow midgets? |
I might chew, but I'd never swallow a midget.
Oh God, I've come over all Kenneth again... |

So what do you DO with this flaxseed oil ? Drink it ? Burn it and inhale the fumes ? Rub it on ? If rubbing, is it before, or after or instead of ?
PLEASE enlighten me ! |

Scots47, I'm not sure if you're truly interested, but health nuts are always eager to expound upon their theories ... flaxseed oil is "drunk" but I've found it a little disgusting and would rather eat a seed.
Flaxseeds are one of the few seeds that contain an excess of omega-3 fatty acids in comparison to omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are a highly unsaturated essential fatty acid that the body cannot manufacture and must obtain through diet - hence "essential". The typical Western diet contains an excess of omega-6 fatty acids because we eat a lot of the fats from soybeans, corn and oilseeds, and the animals we eat do the same. Humans evolved eating - before the advent of agriculture and sedentary living - a diet with a ratio of omega-6s to omega-3s from about 2:1 or 1:1.
So now our bodies are somewhat "flooded" with omega-6 fatty acids and the derivatives that our bodies make from them. The problem being that our bodies need essential fatty acids to make a lot of chemicals for life. The fat that we eat goes into our cells, into the membranes, and into chemicals we need to regulate physical processes. The way in which our bodies use omega-6 fatty acids in the production of these chemicals (hormones and the like, for example thromboxane for clotting function and prostagladins for inflammation) produces more of an inflammatory response than those made from omega-3 fatty acids. Over a lifetime this inflammatory response probably contributes to things like heart disease, cancer, and the other things that tend to kill people in Western countries.
SO. Flaxseed is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which makes your cells happy. In addition to your brain, arteries, and so on.
And it's likely that Northern European people - for example, Scots or their descendents such as myself - ate a lot of fish in their diets in earlier days. And as we all know, fish have a lot of omega-3 fatty acids in them. So we're better off consuming what we evolved to eat, I suppose. Or as close as we can get.
I'm aware that is WAY too much detail. I just felt inspired. And now I've convinced everyone on this board that I'm a freak. Well, better sooner than later! Anyway, I just saved you reading a book (it's actually quite good) called "Queen of Fats" ... don't know if you can find that sort of stuff in Turkey ... |

Very interesting. We're all creatures of habit; none more so than in what we decide to consume.
Traditional Turkish cuisine is delicious and healthy. You may find that you don't need the supplements so much here. |

The nomenclature relates to the chemical structure of the fatty acids, and where the double bond is in relation to the end of the molecule (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_fatty_acid#Nomenclature_and_terminology).
Omega-3 and omega-6 are the only fatty acids that cannot be produced by the body - there are also omega-9 but as these are not essential little research has been done into them as they relate to nutrition. I don't know whether or not omega-1s, so on, exist because I don't know enough about chemistry but I suspect they don't. |

| Linseed Oil.. isn't that the stuff people use to polish their furniture with? I suppose you could find it in any supermarekt or cleaning supply shop. What exactly do people do with this stuff? Huff it? Drink it? I guess if you drink it, your skin would have a nice fresh glean to it. |
