| Hey Wally, I was in Kaohsiung but I have since come back to Canada. Kinda wish I had stayed a little longer though. The connectkaohsiung (yahoo group) guys are great too bad about that lakeside/wannabe preacher idiot though. And yeah, most people who come to asia to teach simply think they are going to walk in and get money for nothing. Many simply clown around and expect to get paid and do nothing. This actually works in some places, nowhere good, but it can happen. If you actually get into a good school though, it can be a lot of work but I think the rewards are worth it. |

Well I finally got a job. Not the ideal gig as I am only working 15 hours a week but it gets me an ARC so I can stay in Taiwan and not have to do visa runs. However, 15 hours a week is not enough to get by (taipei mind you) so I gotta still look for more work in the afternoons-so back to searching and interviewing again.
Advice to Newbies on whether or not to come to Taiwan, stay away! At least for the time being as there are jobs but they are getting only harder to get since the economy is in a slump, few students and a strong influx of foreign teachers. At the moment I'm thinking of going to Korea or elsewhere to teach because of this situation. |

| Are you sure the reason is not because of CNY? Even the China job posting have dropped off to nothing. |

Didn't "Aristotle" say that he won't be offering advice on this forum because he won't be in Taiwan?
Yes, he did:

Let's pray that those weeks pass quickly. |

My best guess is you are the wrong color, either of dark complexion or overseas Chinese. Unfortunately for all of us here, the Chinese on Taiwan continue to be incredibly ignorant and racist. Also the Chinese on Taiwan despise honest people with integrity, particularly in the work environment. Brown nosers and blatant liars who know how to act like idiots and never question their employers are preferred. Another alarminmg trend is unpaid overtime. I do not understand why teachers put up with this but it is the major reason I am off to a real pay check in Korea.
Teaching in Taiwan entails allowing for illicit behavior by employers including tax and immigration fraud and other deceptive practices. Ignorance and the ability to work within a corrupt and unprofessional environment are prerequisites for any occupation on occupied Taiwan. That is the Chinese cuture on occupied Taiwan.
This is East Asia, if you want to work in a real country go to Japan, if you want to get a real pay check, go top Korea and if you want to get paid for doing poor job that allows you to live an " alternative" lifestyle come to Taiwan.

| I think it varies a lot. At my old job a lot was expected. We worked 1:30-9:15 every day but had to be at work 45 minutes early and couldn't leave as soon as the bell rang either. We put in serious vollunteer time for extracurriculars year round (I would say over 30+ hours during halloween and christmas), and we we expected to produce results in the classroom (not just keeping the students in the classes either). We also had to work half of the saturday mornings every month. But our bosses treated us like gold if they liked you (the liked me because I put in the work), and rewarded us financially quite well in the form of bonuses here and there mostly at CNY. |
There are overtime laws on Taiwan but with no free trade unions particuarly for "foreigners" filing a claim with the CLA almost guarantees you will be fired. Most people simply keep a copy of their time cards and pay slips then file a complaint for overtime compensation when they find a better job. There is a two year statue of limitations, so there is no hurry just keep good records.
Good luck!

Aristotle, despite the lampoons on your character and posts, your remarks here are incredibly insightful. None here, particularly after I'd mentioned some of these offenses, sees Taiwan in this light, nor the more legal-lucrative options of working in Korea or Japan.
Honesty in the work place is pretty much effete, thereby making me wonder why China isn't but right in it's sovereignty, to some extent. If the Taiwanese want to continue in this vein, then they cannot actually call themselves a just society nor a democracy, thereby giving China just as legal status over their existence however illegal this may seem. Funny thing is, some teachers here make it sound as if there's nothing wrong, and when you make a critical judgment, will just end up labeling you with lampoons. |

They will do far more than that particularly the ones who have found ways to take advantage of others naivety for a profit. Before I left last year people were complaining of harassment by these individuals that went far beyond lampooning. Unfortunately this is par for the course on occupied Taiwan. I would strongly recommend that unless you are prepared for harassment and possibly more, you should do as so many of your collegues and refrain from such activities while residing in the occupied territory of Taiwan.
As for your assertion that the PRC has claim over Taiwan I would agree that it is accepted that the PRC holds claim over the ROC's assets as it successor but Taiwan is not now, nor was it ever a legitimate asset of the ROC. The succession of Taiwan to the ROC is a farce as dictated by both international law and precedent ( see East Timor).
Good luck!
