OK ... so going by past posts ... a teacher maxes out at 18 YTL per hour (wage) ...

Given that the accepted (language school) norm for a teaching load is 24 classes or less, that gives a weekly wage of 432 YTL ... supposing the teacher, an adult, has no desire to flat share they would be looking at 500 - 600 YTL per month for an OK'ish flat (by Istanbul standards) ... leaving them with around 300 YTL per week before utilities ...

Assuming they're not a 'live on a shoe-string type', their grocery and utilities bill combined would probably come in at over 100YTL ... leaving them under 200 YTL for transport, lunches, entertainment and putting money by for a holiday ... forgetting any idea of providing for the future

Now, Molly says that this TOP-END 'salary' is a 7 out of 10 ... yet this TOP END salary is basic survival for a young single person ... what happens if this TOP-END earner were married ... supporting a wife ... who had a child on the way ... and who planned on living past the age of 65?

Is that TOP-END figure really a 7 out of 10 ...

What of the BOTTOM-END earners ...

i wasn't going to, but since i have been invited-- or dared-- here goes. i would be curious to see what other ET people say, like the HT who posts and perhaps coffeespoonman. i don't know of many ET teachers (relatively speaking) who post here.

1) salary/wages 7
2) maturity of students 8
3) integration of Turkish and Foreign Staff 7
4) working environment 8
5) management 7.5 does that include me? in that case, 10 ha ha
6) fringe benefit 6
7) available resources 9

ok. i work at et and here's, a perhaps, more accurate estimation based on what teachers at et receive. please note that molly is not a teacher at et, so to speak, so her 'package' is not like that of the rest of us.

1) salary/wages 4 vis-a-vis hours worked
2) maturity of students 6
3) integration of Turkish and Foreign Staff 8
4) working environment 7
5) management 7
6) fringe benefit 3
7) available resources 6

i should add that et is now giving work permits and ikamets to its teachers. yes, this is kinda surprising, but it is true. it's not such a bad place to work based on the general crappy standards all over the efl teaching world. however, there are many many things that should be better due to et being such a big and wealthy school. it's a pity it doesnt aim higher with regard education, instead of concentrating on all the pedantic, facade b***s****!! but et isnt as bad as many make out.

for your information mr. thrifty: things have changed somewhat at et taksim over the past couple of months. ok, i admit it's not a super place to work, no language institute is. however, as far as the teachers being given respect and being given 'a break' it's happening now. if teachers need a week off theyve been getting it of late, also theyve been handing in their paperwork for work permits, so things are on the improve to some degree. I dont wanna argue with you about the hopeless task of making et a super place to work, it's not going to happen. but there are worse places, and right now some things are happening to improve it. so give some credit where and when it is due.

sounds to me that ET is only managable for transiant backpackers in their 20's or those just starting out.

i worked at mc.donalds when i was 15, i might have worked at mc.donalds in istanbul when i travelling through the first time, possibly as an alternative to ET but i'd never want to work in a place like that now. inşallah those days are long past.

of course when i finally drink my IQ down to about 65 or if i ever have a stroke then it's good to know that places like ET exist.

^Has B-side got their library back from Bilgi uni?

Have you seen the ads on the metro for B-side? I have to admit I cringe every time I see them. A smiling happy Sally in the classroom reminds me of when the Fast used me in a cinema advert. So embarrasing.

ha Baba, you have been on the telly and everything but have you been on trailers in the cinema?

You know I am not one to go off topic but The Scotland-Ireland massacre will be at 3.30 on Saturday. Italy-Wales at 5.30 and England-France is on sunday at 5.00

But Baba, although mr Akbank is Scottish I will warn him before the match to keep his fists in his pockets this week Smile
