Apartments: My wife and I rent a very nice 2-bedroom place for 3,000 RMB a month. Other expenses, averaged over the past year:

Phone: 70 RMB
Water 25 (tap water. Bottled will run you another 40 a month or so)
Gas 55
Electric 280 (highest in Jul, Aug, Jan, Feb)
Other 155 (broadband plus repairs)

I pay 3 months at a time, not because I have to but because it's more convenient for me.

Living: As so many others have said in the past, your costs depend totally on your lifestyle. But, yes, an additional 5K a month would allow for Starbucks....and maybe even TGIFridays.

Nope, rooster said "Thats all it takes", so go attack him, not mestop saying you don't agree with "me" when the other poster said the same damn thing as I did, duh.

Nathan I dont have much respect for your posts here that is true, but I dont have an anti-you bias. If I did I would have jumped on your earlier post before Rooster.

However you have really misquoted Rooster there Nathan and perhaps this is one of the reasons that you get so argumentative with others on this board.

What you wrote was:

NathanRahl wrote:
In china they always want you to sign atleast a six month rent, and pay for 6 upfront.I talk to many chinese and they pay rent the same, and say it is pretty much done the same way all over chine.

In comparison what Rooster wrote was:

Rooster wrote:
perhaps it's different elsewhere. But, where I am, I had to pay 2 months rent upfront/deposit. That's all it takes.

So you generalized and gave the impression that there was a standard throughout China and Rooster specified that where he/she is your rule does not apply. I also indicated earlier that in Shanghai that rule does not apply either.

The OP is asking about Shanghai. So Nathan are you suggesting that the six month rule applies to Shanghai?

Eslstudies you are really taking yourself down that slope there arent you. You know the one where it all becomes personal and discussion of the thread gets thrown out the window in an effort to appear smarter than the other guy. In no time at all your posts will be littered with emoticons and run on sentences!

The issue of the website that I am involved with has been discussed here at length in the past and I am not going to join you in derailing another thread about that. You can look into that if you want to see where and why you are wrong in what you have suggested above. The fact that you post without even checking the facts about that really calls into question in my mind whether you bother checking the facts on other things that you post here either. I am not sure what the point is of posting something here if it is mis-information as that seems to be counter constructive to the idea of the board.

So are you going to answer my earlier thread related question Are you suggesting that Minhang overall is a better place for a foreigner new to Shanghai to live as opposed to Xuhui? If so why?

Powderfinger as you say the cost of living varies according to your lifestyle. If your target is to spend RMB3,000 per month on everything other than rent then I am sure that you can achieve that. I think that it is a pretty reasonable budget and would even enable some splurging occasionally!

Ah, Clark, I have no desire to dredge back through your posts to see why you run a link to a pay recruiting site. I didn't suggest Minhang was better than anywhere; just that it was an OK place to live based on my experience, as opposed to your lack of it. I don't understand what you mean when you talk about an expat lifestyle, at least when applied to EFL teachers.

You are very polite and self righteous, but I have no idea where you are coming from. I post as a professional ESL/EFL teacher who has 5 years quite recent experience in China. I don't post about places or schools or situations I'm not familiar with.
And you?

I typed - "...where I am...that's all it takes." I apologize about any confusion my words may have caused.

I'm in Shanghai. I previously paid 2 months deposit in Guangzhou, as well. Plus, of course, the first month's rent. I pay/paid the rent every month.

I did meet with a landlord in Shanghai who wanted me to pay 2 months deposit and 2 months rent upfront and then 2 months rent every 2 months.

Happy New Year!!

Let's get this mess sorted out.

In Shanghai when you move in, your landlord will probably give you the option of paying two months' deposit and one month's rent, or two months' rent and one month's deposit. Only a moron would go for the former.

From this point on, it is common to pay rent in two month blocks. I have never heard of anyone paying for more than two months at a time. However, I'm sure if it suited you, the landlord would be more than happy.

Shanghai is pricey and has the usual crap (Starbucks, KFC) that now blights the face of all major cities in the world. You could easily blow a fortune here, or live as I do, relatively frugally and come out of a contract with a fine chuck of wedge. China is now a superb place to put away a bit of change.

Yeah kind of the answer I was expecting really. Keep living in the land of the blind there eslstudies and dont let a small detail such as attaining knowledge about the things you state here creep into the picture! Its probably much easier just to say whatever you want here regardless of whether or not it has any basis in fact!

There you go again with your ignorance hanging out for all to see. Where did I state that I had never lived in Minhang? You really should stick to the facts as you are not too good as guessing there. So far zero for zero.

I am lost as to what your point in this thread is eslstudies. The OP asked about two districts Xuhui and Minhang. How did such a straight forward question lead to such an argumentative thread?

I stated that Xuhui would probably be the better bet in my opinion as much of Minhang is not that well developed. You then jumped in suggesting that you were an expert on Minhang and that others didnt have any idea what they were talking about, and then went on about there being at least one street in Minhang that has good restaurants. Well I can think of a few places in Minhang which are pretty good restaurant wise but there are not as many as Xuhui and it is not as convenient to get around as Xuhui generally is. So in my opinion Xuhui remains the better option for most foreigners especially those new to the city.

I have no idea why you jumped in and went on the offensive. It is okay to disagree you know, but you don't need to automatically attack others. It doesn't help your argument!

I havent heard of tenants being given the option in Shanghai and probably for the very reason that you suggest. Who would choose a two month deposit in that case?

In my experience it has always been a fixed two months security deposit and the first months rent upfront. Given that the places are fully furnished I think that a two month security deposit is fair and pretty standard. Although given the choice of course one months deposit would be a better choice for the tenant if the landlord allows that.

I havent heard of this either and it has always been my experience that the rent is paid monthly, but if you can get a better deal rent wise or if it is more convenient for you to pay every two months then thats great.

Clark, talking to you is a total waste of time.
You have/have had what jobs?
Have you ever been a teacher?
If yes, are you qualified?
Are you a recruiter?
You live/have lived where?
Such evasiveness. Show some honesty and get some respect. You clearly have little here.

Yeah, right dude! And I'm glad I have your approval to disagree.
Meanwhile, let me know where you are coming from, apart from the site link, and answer the questions.

Eslstudies unlike yourself I don't see the need to make things personal. I come here to discuss topics and help others out wherever I can and that is what I try to do.

If you disagree with what I write here or my points of view then fine discuss this.

As per forum rules you should discuss the post not the person making the post and to this end none of your questions are relevant. You have the right to ask those questions and I have the right not to answer them as I don't see their value.

Sure you will likely argue 'but if we don't know who you are then how can we be expected to take your view seriously'. Well quite honestly I don't post here for your, or anyone elses, approval.

If I post something that is incorrect then who I am does not make it correct. So if you want to discuss a point then I am happy to do so. If you want to escalate things to personal insults, unfounded insinuations, and personal attacks then let me know and I will know not to enter into discussions with you in future. Life is too short for all that kind of emotional stuff on a public forum!

Based on what Idi Amin typed, I guess I am a moron. But, neither of the landlords I mentioned gave me an option. Personally, I'd rather keep the money. There is such a thing as the Present Value of money. I'd prefer to keep it in my hands, rather than theirs.

My landlord is very cool. I know of some other foreign tenants, with different landlords, in my building who must pay their own bills; I simply give my landlord the bills and he pays them. I mistakenly threw out my last month's phone/internet bills. He said it was OK and that I can pay next month - March. China seems to be easy in regards to paying monthly. I did not pay for my internet until after 3 months in my apartment. For awhile I thought it was free, until the bills finally arrived!!

It does seem that in regards to phone/internet, the bills arrive every 2 months. I receive separate bills for each month at the same time. I pay for past usage, not future usage. But, I do pay the rent every month.

Beyond that, has anyone seen "The Last King of Scotland" about Idi Amin? It's worth watching, in my opinion.

On a lighter note, the West is trouncing the East in the NBA All-Star game. Let's Go Knicks!!

I posted a similar question on shanghaiexpat.com. I will post the question and some of the responses in case anyone is doing a search on this site for the same info.

Quote:
Hello, I am thinking about accepting a job in Shanghai (I have never been). Without going into too many details, the workplace is in Minhang and the co. offers 4500rmb/month housing allowance. For me to be able to make a decent budget, I would like to spend an additional 3-4000rmb/month for other living expenses including entertainment, food, transport etc. Can anyone tell me if I would be dreaming by thinking that I could do this, or might this afford me some amount of western comfort during my everyday life. I am single if it helps in the calculation, and would live with roomates if this option were cheaper.

Any information that anyone could provide would be very helpful.

Thanks,

reply #1:
u can find some good housing for 4.500rmb per month. not big and not great but some good stuff i used to live in a service apt paid by my boss 2 bedroom not big but good and they paid little over 3.500 rmb a month in jing an district 10mns walk from nanjing lu and jing an temple as for entertainement u are calculating like 1.000 rmb a week this depends greatly on u ....single u may want to go out a litle at night this means more money but it is possible. if u think of 10.000 rmb a month including both i would say u could live not too bad. but no crazy life.
let see what other people are going to say

every month 4500RMB for the rent is quite nice.
4000RMB for life expense is ok, if you are by yourself.
But MingHang is kinda far away from downtown, it depends on where you life, maybe there is metro, maybe not, you might have to use taxi, it will be an expense.

These replies seem pretty much in-line with what others here are saying. Living close to school seems to be a good thing re:traffic but not so hot relative to being away from D-town.

4500 is more than enough for finding a decent apartment.
We currently pay 5000 for a nice 3 bedroom in Changning.
The 4500 USD are for expats and I do not evn begin to imagine the kind of luxury they represent. I think for a single person it should not be too difficult to find a decent place for 3000 a month. My sister in law pays 1300 a month.
Minhell (aka Minhang) will be a cheaper place to live. Xuhui is likely to be more convenient. I guess it depends on where you would be in both districts. I currently live in Changning and work in Minhell (aka Minhang) and I do not know anybody who actually likes Meanhell (aka minhang). I have also lived in Xuhui and worked in Minhell. It is about 1 hour commute to get from either district (changning or xuhui) to Minhang.
Find a place to stay for a couple of weeks when you first get here and then begin the looking for an apartment during that time. Go to several real estate agencies and tell them what you are looking for. I usually look at around 20 different places before choosing one. Remember to bargain about the rent.
