Interesting read Paps......what kind of business are you in and which ones can be profitable here. My main concern is the unstable investment climate and the need to trust others with my money. And the dealings with Indonesian bureaucracy would give me a few headaches. I can't see foreginers, no matter what we do, escape from being screwed by the government. But I would seriously like to escape the minions on the wheel world of teaching.

...when i starting this, i decided to go around to the surrounding kampungs to get the local leaders "blessings" for my venture, as we all know how some indonesians ( most, actually) feel about dogs. the first said, no problem, he loved dogs and would like to even help out in any way he could. the second and third wanted rp. 300,000 a month each for "protection" of the kennel and its surroundings. 3 weeks later the first came to me one day saying that he "changed his mind" and would also want 300,000 ( as none of you are surprised by this, neither was i...but i had to do it)

...heres the interesting part...about 6 months ago i gave the first leaders son a job at the kennel...mainly just walking the dogs and such. one day, he takes a single dog (unusal as they are usually walked in groups) and simply doesn't return. i head out to the village the next day, half upset for the wellbeing of the "missing" boy and angry that i was no longer in possession of my female breeding shepard( value, about 16 juta). he tells me the boy is at his mothers house which is far away but he will look into bringing him back as soon as possible.
two weeks later, as i sit on my balcony, my wife points out a beautiful shepard being walked on a street next to ours. we decide to inquire about where these nice people obtained such a dog. i instantly know this as my missing dog and confirming the ear tattoo i ask them to take me to where they got it. ofcourse, they take me straight to the kampung leaders house/hut. HE SOLD THEM THE DOG FOR RP. 400,000!!!!
i get the dog back and he pleasantly tells me that i don't owe him anything for this months "protection".
protection from what i asked. what was i paying him off for anyway?
his honest ( as honest as he can get, i guess) reply was that i was paying for the promise that this would never happen again.........
..... AND THEN, his son showed up for work that monday as if nothing had happened and for about 30 seconds i had no idea what to do with him.......... he picked up feces like a trooper for three days and then i never saw him again

That is a great story Beefer. Anyone who hasnt been there wouldnt believe it mind. Smile
So you are paying out 900.000 Rp in "protection money then? Having money in Indonesia really is like trying to guard a block of cheese as all the mice come from all directions and try to nibble at it.

......hmmmmm, at this time and date, James ( formerly known as papillon) seemed a bit more positive in his opinion of my successful venture.

why did that change, James??...it would be pretty weak of you if your opinion changed only because i managed to stir you up again.
you still spend alot of your time confused, don't you?

...cognitive dissonance, James...look it up

chin up, lad....i'm startin' to worry about you
