Yeah I just think have a big smile, be friendly, be yourself and youll be fine. Make sure to act a bit confused, but not at all angry.

Will do. I am going to immigration on Monday 12 March so I guess it will be a few weeks after that. I will dig out this thread then.

Wow! Thanks for checking back in...It's good for everyone to know these things. Do you recall the per diem rate they used for the fine and is this Guadalajara INAMI?

No, they just told me this was the maximum fine. The immigration office is in DF.

Man thats a ridiculous fine. Did you argue or pay it right away? That's grounds for just walking out off the office. But your situation was tough, I realize, but damn. I'm surprised. Did you make jokes? Sorry I keep asking these questions, trying to think what I'd do in that situation. I just think that's too much. At least everything is clear now.

CorporateHuman

There is no point in any of that if you want to be legal. I just have to accept it. I will pay, smile and not be a bad boy again.

If someone were caught working illegally for a year in your home country, what would the penalty be?
Only a fine of about $500 US, and told not to do it again?

Exactly!

I think in Mexico there is a lax attitude to the law, but if we break it (which I didn't do on purpose), we must expect to be punished. ls650's comments made me think...I guess we are lucky to be in Mexico!

I think Phil was very lucky not to have been deported. It's good to know that there is a maximum fine, I suspect the per diem rate would have been higher.

But what I want to know is...

...how did you let your FM3 expire and a year go by, in a way that was "not on purpose"?
