| So... if you can't afford it... don't go... |
The unreasonable expense is only one of the reasons I choose not to go to the Doo-buy 'conference'. But that doesn't change the fact that the cost is indeed unreasonable. I know this is Doo-buy, and, as bje has said, superficial glitz is everything, but the fact remains that a conference which ends up costing several thousand dirham for those who do not live in the UAE and do not have an employer to pay for them, is a silly notion. |

| You had fun for 400 AED but to be fair, let others express their opinions and we take it from there! I might be wrong?????? TESOL membership/ Conference fee/ Job fair = 1000 AED, Not expensive huh??????? |
Right...so I shouldn't express that I had fun, have the good fortune to live in the UAE and an employer who reimburses conference fees? There was no point at which I didn't "let others express their opinions".
By no means everyone who attended TESOL Arabia this year attended the job fair. Early registration cost 400 dh.
We make our choices concerning PD and how much we are willing to invest in it. I imagine that should there be a large conference in KSA, for example, as a UAE resident I would face paying for airfare and hotel etc. If suspected a rip-off I wouldn't go, and likely wouldn't bother venting attendant angst on a discussion forum.
Time to take a chill pill mate. In your mind others may be out to persecute you and to rein in your 'freedom of speech'. In fact you've managed to publically unleash plenty of vitriol over the past month or so. |

| It was my first TESOLArabia and riddled with agonies and ecstasies. Most of the former were caused by Dubai- The Concrete Oasis Under Construction- and the apparent barbarism of the TESOL tribe. The ecstasies were caused by the outstanding work a of a remarkable few in the industry. The price tag was high and would be utterly inappropriate when the conference is held at Dubai Men's College next year: I trust it will be adjusted. As to speed-dating, Cleo, you certainly didn't miss anything. |

| TESOL 2007 in Seattle ran quite close to 1000 dirhams (including the annual TESOL membership). |

Actually I broke down those expenses on the previous page from the TESOL US website.
So... did you go since presumably it was close by or were you on the road? |

I skipped reading when the argument began. I didn't end up going...there were some big names that I would have liked to hear speak (related to dissertation topic) but I decided to save the fees I would have paid for registering on SAturday and use it to buy some articles. |
