Though S Korea may just be a place to get a start and by what it sounds get some funds saved up. Something I could use in the beginning and be helpful for when I decide to go full journalist. Thanks for all the advice, it has been extremely helpful in working out my plan and if anyone has any more, I would gladly listen! |
I repeat, under no circumstances should you go to S. Korea ok? Read the S.Korea board, get depressed, chuck the idea, for your own good mate...
As the Koreans like to say (based on their SOV language); South Korea, NO! |

| Ok, I see bad and some good on the boards, and it's not like this would be the place I stay. I just want to save up a little money to prepare for later, and help with some debt while I am gone. |

try doing the google, Google Earth that is. Look up Seoul. Try to locate a single park, green area in the city. You won't find nuthin'. When you find something that might be it, it's the U.S. Army base.
It's all concrete, apartments.
Then look up Pyongyang.

If you decide to go to S. Korea, by all means steer clear of the private language academies, called hagwons. I'd bet that the people complaining on this thread work for one of these institutions, which are notorious for taking advantage of teachers.
You should opt for a position in a public school instead. I am now on my second contract here and have no complaints at all. The pay is great, the students are even better, and I've had some very interesting experiences here. It's not for everyone, but it is what you make of it. Most of the negative posters in the Korea forum work for hagwons, and the people that are enjoying their lives here usually don't post.
Send me a PM if you need more info. |

| As far as the life outside the US, I can deal with it. I got to take a study abroad for a few weeks in South Africa. |
As a photojournalist, you might just find yourself finding a whole lot of things to write up and photograph in SA - diverse landscape, diverse people, many a story to be shared.. |

| With a Master's you'll have no problem landing a university job in China. Most of us have BA's. While the pay seems low it's actually rather good on a per hour actually taught basis. You also have lots of free time to either pick up extra work or do other things. |
