1. Phuket - Thailand (island life - AWAY from the tourist zones)
2. Mazatlan - beautiful coast great food - Mexico
3. Mazanillo - same as Mazatlan
4. Santorini - island life - Greece - again away from the tourist
Catch the water theme . . .?
All four places have good food, relaxed lifestyle, the sea and warm weather. |

Still looking for that place, though as earlier stated, my opinion will probably change as I get older.
Right now it would probably be Hawaii (work visa/chance of full time, weather), but if I find a better place, I'll let you know [I've lived in Hong Kong, Taiwan, USA - (Florida and Connecticut, Maine), and Japan]. |

Back to Turkey - it was freezing when I was there however many years ago it was. Whilst I love Istanbul in the snow, it's the rain and the wind which is more frequent, that I hate.
If however global warming has surrounded the place in a golden glow and winters are as warm as being snuggled in a duvet....then maybe it might just move up the list. |

I would like to live where I do now (Vancouver) but without the 9 months of grey days/drizzle/rain... beautiful city during the late spring/summer/early fall...
I have not travelled enough/ worked abroad to comment on any other countries. |

There are many nice countries, but all countries have pros and cons - none are perfect.
Some of the places I enjoyed living in.
1. Brazil - just the general atmosphere, and you can find everything you want from modern Euro style places (Curitiba, and other places near Argentine border) to 'african' type places like Salvador do Bahia, in the north east.
2. Guatemala - spent a year in Quetzaltenango, in the highlands, which has a nice climate, and has a much lower crime rate compared with Guatemala city. As a teacher you don't make much money, but enough to live.
3. I also liked Colombia, and it is not nearly as dangerous as people imagine.
3. equal Sri Lanka - mostly friendly, simple, dignified people. The regal beauty of the Tamil people has to be seen to be believed - magnificent. This is one of the few places in Asia where the locals will invite you into their homes, with no ulterior motives.

ghost, did one visit Sri Lanka on holiday or live there for a period of time?
I have to agree with your statement but I have only spent 3 weeks there. Living somewhere is very different from holidaying in a place. |

Some countries are so large, and many are so varied. I can only choose by region or city:
Tied for First: Vermont and Koh Samui (Thailand)
Tied for Second: San Francisco and Singapore
Tied for Third: Positano/Amalfi Drive (Italy) and South Beach Miami
I know this may look like a cop-out for someone who can't decide between a half-dozen locations, let alone countries...but it's the best I can do |

I have a two-thirds-built house in Sri Lanka and have spent at least three months a year there for the last six years.
Few or no well-paying jobs there apart from the British Council or American University of Colombo.
I know of a fair number of Sri Lankans who lived abroad, came back and found they couldn't stand it and went back abroad again, so it's not paradise.
That said I'd generally say its OK. |

Well, the Ukraine girls really knock me out,
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
Those Georgia girls are always on my mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mind
