| I've always been wary of Buxiban simply because they charge to look at their information. I have heard a few people mention cold calling schools in the area you are looking for a job. Would you recommend this when looking for schools in a specific area? |

I don't get your point.
Even though I don't agree that it is necessarily the case, I can certainly understand the logic that allowing schools to pay for advertising etc creates a bias on a site.
But I fail to see why requiring users to add to the site (either information or financially) is a reason to be 'wary' of the site. Someone has to pay for the upkeep of the site and if it is not going to be the schools then why not the teachers who choose to use the site.
Not trying to be confrontational here and I fully respect your decision not to pay, I am just curious as to the insinuation that a user pays site is something to be wary of!

It is hit and miss of course as schools that are not looking for anyone at the time that you approach them are not going to be very helpful. Most schools don't tend to plan ahead so even if their current teacher is leaving in a month they won't tend to think too much about that. So your timing would have to be pretty good.
The upside to cold-calling is that you can get in first for positions that are coming available so you may also find yourself a better able to negotiate things free of competition for the position. It also gives you the chance to contact schools that do not normally advertise positions.
So overall I think that cold-calling is a good addition to applying for advertised positions. |

| Why not post your c.v. - here or at some other appropriate sites. State what you're looking for. That's how I landed my first university job here. |
