Sorry, not to exagerate, but several keys came off before I threw it away. |

Out of like five laptops I've had, I've never had one without problems. Toshiba, Sony, Compaq. They all use the same components, and those components go wrong often. Choosing between the different brands is like choosing between a Pontiac Vibe and a Toyota Matrix. A Geo Metro and a Suzuki Swift back then. The cars use the same parts. It's the same car.
How to choose?
Compare the prices and the components.
When you can't choose between a few different models, pick the one that looks better.
Have fun using it until it breaks and you have to buy a new one. |

Chiming in to recommend the Acer- purely due to my own experiences of durability. I bought mine (Acer Aspire 1304) in Spain 4 years ago, and have lugged it into and out of more close to a dozen countries- Upgraded the RAM to 512 about a year ago- other than that, it's had no problems other than the occasional virus.
Last month, a teacher trainee sat on it, and during the same course, I dropped it on the floor- no visible damage, and it still works fine.
So while I'm not into brand loyalty, I'll buy Acer again- indestructible.
Best,
Justin |

Thanks, Justin. So the Acer I saw has 512 memory already and is new, as opposed to refurbished. I'll check Office Depot's price as well. |

To add my own 2cents.
I have an acer apsire 5000 something. For the most part I love it. The screen is crisp HD. It survived a nasty bicycle accident last fall. But. It's big (15 in screen & 1.5 thick). If you're going to be travelling a lot and bringing a laptop with you, get the smallest one you can afford. As a desktop replacement, mine is great. It's just too big & heavy for travel though. |

Well, I found an Acer 5100 for 400$ (then I purchased Office and antivirus and antispyware, so add another 300!) -- thanks for all the help. Can I ask some of your with Acers, is the touch pad really sensitive? I just paid a bill before I was ready and I jump to other websites before I have really touched the button. |

You can adjust the sensitivity in the hardware profiles. I don't remember exactly how, and in any case my OS is in Spanish, so what I clicked would be different- but it can be done. (IT help, anybody?)
I'll go along with what the other poster said about Acer being large-ish and heavy-ish. I prefer this, as it makes it a little more solid than some. But it is heavy when I travel.
Best,
Justin |

I hear many contracts include a room/apartment that has a computer. I for one intend to simply look for one of these contracts and use what ever computer is provided for me. |

Depends a heck of a lot on where you're going. I for one have never heard of such a thing, or place, in Latin America. (Which is where I choose to live.)
