Yeah, I can't honestly recommend a public school teaching career as a long term option for anyone these days. High stress, long hours, low pay, and no respect. My two year stint was just a stepping stone to international school positions. That first semester when I was adjusting really was a short season in hell, and I have no plans of ever going back to teaching in the States. |

I've only ever subbed in public schools. But frankly, having both my parents and one sibling as lifers in US public schools, I don't feel the urge...
I really respect people who stick it, but is wasn't for me, as it's frequently more about bureacracy than it is about learning or teaching...
Best,
Justin |

Hanged_Man, I read your description of teaching drugged up Latino gang bangers. Any kind of drugged up gang-bangers doesn`t sound like a good situation. Sounds life-threatening to me! Anyway, you mentioned being at an International School. I take it you are now back abroad? May I ask what country?
Also, if you or anyone on this forum knows how one could possibly teach Japanese back home in the States, as a non-Japanese person, I would love to hear it.
Anyway, good post! |

Actually, while they could be amazingly disrespecful and lazy I rarely felt like I was in any physical danger. My school was right on the border of Mexico, and while there was a lot of gang involvement the amount of violence was limited compared to some urban schools.
Right now I am teaching at an international school in Kuwait. I like my school, but Kuwait itself leaves much to be desired. I'll probably be looking for a new school next year, preferably in east or southeast Asia. |
