You should count yourselves lucky that your students bring their text books!
I had one class recently where only three out of a class of 25 students brought theirs in. At the beginning of term they had one each.
I turned the lesson into a discussion class on why they didn't bring their text book!
I have an additional problem in that I use a text book with a revised edition. The poorer students borrow theirs from the school library and of course it is the older edition. So we have problems of altered units, altered words in the units (eg. "telegram" or "fax") AND different page numbers!

At the uni where I work, we are supposed to count the student as absent if they come to class without their textbooks.

Ahh absences. Here we are supposed to issue F's after 4 unexcused absences and only doctors notes count as an excused absence. So what happens is that at the end of the term the students all ask how many absences they have and those with more than 4 magically appear at the Dean's office with excuse notes- which are always accepted- at the end of the term.
