Another good piece of advice is if you're in a local restaurant and they bring you a menu entirely in English, ask for the VNese menu instead. If they say no, leave. Some restaurants (eg. Loan on the corner of Hai Ba Trung & Ly Tu Trong) have 2 different menus, and the English one invariably has less choice and higher prices.

hi im a new memmber. u can call me uyen( sound like wind). im vietnamese and have lived in vn over 20 years so i think i can help a little.
u got 3000usd so let think what i can do with such amount of money.
i dont know how your demands are but the small room or a room in 5 stars hotel can cost u from 10-150usd per day. the cheapest room must be around local market which is very crowded and noisy( better surrounding cost more). in 10usd room, u got 1 bed, 1 table, small tv, small fridge shower with hot and cold water,i got a friend who stay there so its 100% true, i can recommend some places.u can also have other services like laundry or food, drink with reasonabe prices. 5 star room must be in the center which is most beautiful, near window shopping places.
food , its really up to u. u can dine out in a standard restaurant with 2 usd ( 1 dish like soup, noddle. steak, rice...), at local market its less than 1 usd. u also can enjoy buffet in 5 stars hotel with just 25 usd( seafood, sushi, chinese dishes, vietnamese dishes, western food, cake, ice cream..)
transportation, u can catch taxi or motobike atxi. motobike taxi is more popular and cheaper. they ll charge u up to the distance. taxi price is fixed less than 1usd/ km but the motobike taxi , u need to bargain, sometime if u r a newbie u may pay more than for a taxi, sorry to say that.
if u need any help, u can contact me by PM (MOD EDIT)
have a nice day.
