Hi- My first posting on this strand.
I was glad to read tw's post of May 6 that listed Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool as one of the best unis in China. Out of the blue, a couple of posters on some other boards have mentioned the school by name, and that not everyone has been happy with their experiences there. I'm exploring the possibility of trying it out there, so it caught my interest. I didn't follow it up on the other board, instead looking here.
My only overseas teaching was in a Pedagogical uni in Ukraine, but I've had hundreds of international Asian ESL students in my stateside uni over the years from Japan, Korea, Viet Nam, Thailand, Laos, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, along with a very few private student-friends from Hong Kong - none from Mainland China. I've listened at great length, though, to the experiences of one of my colleagues who taught at a uni in Beijing six years ago.
BTW, I asked about an Institute in Hong Kong (The Hong Kong Institute of Education) on that strand a week ago. Lots of readers, no responders. Would be interested in any knowledge there too.
In any case, I feel like I have my eyes wide open, and I'm excited by the possiblibities of China. But I have to admit, cruising this Board is making me a bit nervous.
Thoughts? |

Again, please provide us with some more info as to your academic background, experience, etc., etc.
China is both an easy-and-hard nut to crack at the same time. Jobs here are still plentiful for ESLers, at least for the moment, but not all of the jobs are for all of the takers, so to speak.
If you want the best in China, then you will have to have the credentials to make it. As has been often said, Beijing and Shanghai are extremely competitive and I can also say that the market in Guangzhou has tigthened -- I have seen that this summer here -- not for me -- but for others.
And there is nothing on this board that should make you nervous -- aim at your level and you will do just fine. Above all, spend some time learning the market before you jump. |
