For some reason I stopped getting notifications for these responses. You guys are awesome, thanks so much for all these great posts!
Since asking my original question, my boyfriend has gone up his chain of command and found out that he can transfer to a base in the National Guard with no problem. He is still waiting to hear back about the possibility of working on one of those bases. I'm currenly searching for a job with one of the Big Four, and I'm hoping to get placed near a base to increase his chances of finding work. It's a lot to juggle, and to top it all off, he found out he might be getting deployed to Germany soon! It's just a possibility at this point, but if it happens I guess I'll follow HIM and teach ESL in Deutschland instead of Japan. Anyway, I'll post more as I find out more, because maybe this info will be useful to someone else in a similar situation...
If we DO end up in Japan (still a very good possibility) then he may be able to teach Spanish lessons. Actually my Spanish is very good so that might be something I'll look into on the side as well! I'm filling out my Berlitz application right now.... |

| Yeah. If you want to go to Germany with him, YOU'LL have to start looking for jobs on base. I've worked on base in Germany before. It took months to get a job, but I was eventually able to secure a GS job as well as part-time NAF work. I made more than enough to get by on, even without any housing assistance (which overseas hires typically don't get). That, however, was in the days before the Euro. |
