Are you saying that you wish you had done these things but somehow overlooked and have been kicking yourself ever since? Or do you enjoy stating the exceedingly obvious. |

| I wish I'd gone with a gaijin apartment or Leopalace-type arrangement for the first six months. I committed too fast to a rental apartment, shelled out key money and bought basic stuff, and moved within the first six months to a job and location more suitable for me. |

My advice would be to start studying Japanese as quickly as possible. I find that my life has become much better and easier since learning some Japanese. Everyone I know who didn't start studying when they came wishes they knew more Japanese, or have not even bother to learn at all (and do you want to be that person?).
The other advice people have given you is good. I mean obviously employment, apartment, arc, cell phone and such would be your first priority if you don't have them already.
I also highly recommend exploring your neighborhood. I am always finding new and exciting places close to my house even after several months of living here.
Good luck in Japan,
Chris |
