As a reader, there is nothing worse than having to plow through oodles and oodles of "mangled verbosity."

What about quantity over quality? THe more you write, the better your grade.

Exactly. That is the great writing foible in Latin America. When I was an undergraduate I studied at the University of Chile through an exchange program where I had to write a paper in partnership with a Chilean student.

We had to break up because she wouldn't edit - only add. I would say, 'but we already said that' and she would say, but it's not long enough.

Ironically my papers passed and hers didn't because actual academics (i.e. our prof.) know how to write according to a Western style and want their students to. Otherwise they could never get published out of their country.

As for my students, they throw a fit if I fail them and then pass someone with less pages. They honestly beleive that an eight page work of plagiarism deserves a higher grade.

Again, real Ecua teachers seem to grade on that basis... so big surprise.

But this is something they need to know because (really hard concept to grasp) if you apply for northamerican scholarships... or anything, your applications essays will have page limits and people will throw out essays that go over.

Let the grade changing begin!
WE've finished the term and have to enter grades. Of course, students and teachers are asking me to change grades. And get extremely angry if I make a mistake, like put a B instead of an A. Sorry, but anyone entering 800 grades is likely to make a mistake.
However, looks like they won't have to worry about me next year. Due to the fact that my grades are objective and hard to change, the school won't be asking me back next year.

We've seen a lot of your school saga here, naturgirl, so I won't say I'm sorry to hear you're going...

Good luck, and what's next?

Best,
Justin

I don't know. My contract here end 5 Sept. And they're keeping me in the dark about things here. I fond out because my coordinator let it slip that they're looking for another teacher. At least my coordinator thinks I'm oding well, says I'm the best in years. Teachers here last between 3 and 6 months, foreign teafhers that is. Because of the discipline problems. Rich kids think that they can get away with anything and I don't put up with it and the school thinks that I should tell them everything three time. . . no joke. . and then the big punishment? A note in their agenda, which they conveniently forget to bring to class.

Another secondary school I suppose, the pay is better than at a language school and the uni where I am only has part-time positions.

Hopefully I'll be able to tough it out until Dec, but who knows. I've been looking since October of last year, but decided to come back this year, now I've had enough, with the kids, the lack of discipline, the director refusing to back me up, and the 1.5 hour commute as well.

Just have to find a good school.
