| Good old FT's - bring up the subject of busses and the expert comments come pouring in. It's surely a compliment to our profession - you'd never find such a level knowledge from other ex-pat groupings!!! Maybe we should create a sticky on the price of tickets????? |

| It's the weekend, little to occupy your SOL, and you're bored. I pose the question, "Do you think being an FT is a profession?" |

If you were moving to another town/city in your home country, wouldn't transport links, shopping, eating, and access to banking/postal facilities be things you'd want to know about?
In my experience, such things can be even more important to know for those moving to a foreign country; they're useful for that humdrum thing known as everyday life, and can reassure people that they're not moving to the middle of nowhere in a backwards country.
And, um, why the snobbery about buses? |

snobbery - nawwwwwwwwwwwwww
perception of expectation, lifestyle, and social status of the FT - yesssssssssssssssssssssss
Nothing against buses and bus routes - but I would hate them to become a typifying factor in describing the FT and their job expectations |

| Exactly what has any of this got to do with the original question asked? It has degenerated into a nothing thread. |

It brought on a good laugh, so it's not good for nothing. (Like those double negatives???????) |

Dalian is not a terrific place. I don't know why people like it.
Food sucks. There is nothing to do there. It is a place that sucks the life out of you. It can only be endured for a week a most. At least there is finally a Subway (sandwiches) and Starbucks (or four) there. |
I don't live in Dalian centre, but why do I like it?
The sky is almost always blue. Sure not 100% of the time, but far more than I have ever experienced even in the west. Probably about 90% of the time.
Nice Chinese dialect. Quite easy to just go into shops and chat to people. No staring at the white monkey talking chinese type b.s.
Quite relaxed, talkable Chinese people
Modern, with plenty of shops, but not as in your face trendy as shanghai etc
Big scope of stuff to do. I take it you are not an outdoors person complaining that dalian has nothing to do? Cos unless there's some amazing place that has passed me by, compared to most of the drab empty sprawls in china, dalian has loads to do. Beaches, the hills, some REAL parks, etc.
As to the food, I agree that it isn't as spicy as in wuhan where i was before, and restaurant food is mediocre, but the dalianese are better at homecooking than the wuhanese. They have a better handle on what westerners want, too.
It's good here! I have a suntan for the first time since I came to china! |
