Huh? I find that most people gain weight when they get here, unless they were eating healthy in their home countries, too. If you just eat anything thinking to yourslef that Japanese food is all healthy, then you will gain a lot of weight. It seems that most females gain when they get here, most males lose when they first get here, followed by gaining a little way down the road.

But if you take even a little responsibility by not eating at 7/11 or McDs every single day and actually exercising then there won't be any problems.

Gold's has a few 24/7 gyms in Tokyo, but Japan is behind the curve in 24/7 services (except for convenience stores). Just recently a 24 hr supermarket opened near my house (been in the US since the 70's in subburban areas), and even my bank ATM finally went 24/7 (except for some holidays?!), but not at all urban branches.

The sports clubs here are usually pretty good, though the metropolitan gyms can save you a bundle. The problem with the latter sometimes is when you use them (they can be extremely busy) and the lack of variety of weight and exercise machines (something I'm missing at my club now that they are undergoing renovations).

Don't sweat it. I have gained weight, lost it, and gained it back again depending on how busy I am at work and how addicted I get to using my pc for chatting, posting, and playing pc games.

I gained 7 kilos within about 3 months of moving to Japan- my version of the "freshman 15" I think (Have lost it now). A Dutch friend of mine has gained about 20 kilos since marrying a Japanese woman 2 years ago and moving to Japan- his weight gain has been quite spectacular. In both our cases I think beer consumption was one of the major culprits...

Thanks for all the info, everyone. It sounds like with a few adjustments I'll be alright.

The reason it's all easy here in Vietnam is that everything is cheap. That always makes life easy.

Rai, I'm from Chicago too. Grew up in La Grange, lived Foster and Damen for many years and Milwaukee and Wolcott for many more years.

That's exactly what I DO. And in a year, I've gained 2 kilos. Confused

I'm a bit worried about this too... But in the last two or three months months I've lost 4 kilos by not drinking beer and taking up jogging again. So I hope I'm not tempted back to beer when I get to Japan! Confused
