Well, they don't actually require you to take the JMA insurance. You're just left to your own devices to realize that it's not very good, though, as it's the policy they push. |

Well, a request for clarification, as after breezing through the labor laws I didn't see anything on this:
Is it against immigration laws to work privately? I was under the impression that so long as the income was reported it would be fine (unlike Korea).
The line in question is: "5.1 The employee is prohibited from being hired by anyone other than Nichibei Gakuin and from working privately while under contract with the school (as it is a violation of immigration laws)."
Can you not also work two jobs? I thought the immigration law was just that you needed a work visa, and after that so long as your employment was along the lines of the type of work visa you would be fine. |

It is my understanding from people that have been hired by NOVA, that they insist on teachers having insurance before even setting foot in Japan. Tell me how a person is supposed to get national health insurance that way. Nope, you are stuck with JMA or something foreign. According to a 2005 union article, 4500 NOVA employees had JMA, so they are pretty convincing. |

NOVA doesn't say that. In their information packet, they inform people that they are required to have insurance. They can sign up with JMA then and there. If they choose not to, they have to write something saying what they will do for insurance. |
