Sigmoid, Im not sure what you're into but when I was there, I like to see how people live and how it differs from Canada so I went to different neighbourhoods and different districts (there are quite a few of them) all over HCMC. I definitely recommend renting a moped (Xe Om) as it was super fun, albeit dangerous since there really isn't any laws except for not hitting people.

But there's museums, great restaurants to be found in any district, "massage" places if you're into that kinda thing, great shopping to be found at Cho Ben Thanh, Diamond Plaza, and Saigon Plaza. With the exception of Diamond Plaza, prices are always negotiable so keep that in mind. And also great nightlife. Good clubs I went to were Volcano and Apocalypse Now and many others but I forgot the names. There's also many bars around the downtown area such as Chu or Saloon Seventeen that I recommend (though beer is expensive).

Hope that helps.

To tarheelbaby and harryG: I'm in the exact same situation as you guys although it looks like i'm headed to Danang. There seem to be quite a few schools just opening up shop there and i am attracted to the seemingly low number of expats. I too would like to have contacts when i get there if it is convenient. I arrive sometime in September.

If I was just arriving I'd head for Danang too. Saigon's sold its soul & loses more of its charm every day.
